Hey people .... recently installed Office 2000 Pro on my working computer (also made a copy of it for back-up purposes). Now when I go to My Computer and right click on either of my cd drives, get an error message and it closes everything down and then the desk top returns.... event viewer says the fault was in explorer.exe but no help from the micorsoft info. Anyone know what to do about this, other than reinstalling XP. Did a restore to before the installation of Office and still had the problem. Device manager shows the proper cd drives, but my computer just shows them as generic icons, not the specific type that it used to show (ie. Sony cd-rw *****, just cd drive).
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did delete the two drives and re-booted .... both show up properly in My Computer and in hardware manager .... still fails to work the right click (explore) on either drive ....not a problem with any other drive/folder/etc. This may have been going on before I installed Office 2000 ..... was trying to share one of the drives with another 'puter since that one wouldn't read the Office 2000 disc inorder to install on the second 'puter ..... will look at the link you posted ....

You wouldnt have Spy Sweeper installed by any chance?

Did you use drive mapping over a network to share the drives?

In the Event Viewer logs whats the full description of the error in the description box? you may if this is a corrupted set of files need to run sfc /scannow from the run box to check system file integrity and reinstall non-corrupted versions. ( note you will need your XP cd, plus it may overwrite some windows update files so a vist to WU is needed after the scan )

Have not used spy sweeper ..... don't recall if I mapped that drive or not ...may have ..... will run the file check when I get back home and see what that turns up. Thanks for all the help so far. All I have found that addresses the issue from Microsoft is a repair installation.

Thats actually my last option for you, in the repair install, one benefit is that you dont have to generally re-install all your software again, just all the updates for the OS.

nice instrucions for the repair install as a crucial part is not hitting "R" to enter recovery console but later hitting "R" to repair the install ( part 2 of the guide ) basically installing XP over itself ( aka dirty install ) http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdrepair/index.htm

Will have to do a repair ....sfc /scannow didn't do it .... have also disabled all non-microsoft shells for anyones info .... will report back on this ...I know it seems to happen to a lot of people (may think its a problem associated directly with AMD processors ...)
