Explorer.exe won't run

XP Home machine boots up fine until you go into a user when everything loads except explorer.exe. There are no suspicious processes in Task Manager but when I try to run explorer the task bar appears briefly then it closes again.

Any ideas guys?

 

Maybe it's corrupted? One suggestion, until someone wiser comes along.

Get another copy of explorer.exe from a friends PC, but make sure it is the same OS version, and size, of course.

Rename you existing explorer.exe to explorer.old (or whatever) and load the new version into C:\windows (that's where it is in my XP Pro--make sure you check your location).

Reboot your PC and see what happens. It can't hurt and may cure the problem.

When I tried using a command prompt to copy the file the pc rebooted. I could move the hard drive to another pc as a slave but I am loathe to do this in case it is a virus that will infect the 2nd machine.

Cannot see where that page helps Studio - it may help if I was getting an error when explorer closes but nothing appears at all - other than a very quick flash of a taskbar.

 

F8 Safe Mode? Use Internet Explorer instead?
Safe Mode / System Restore?

 

I'm confused. I don't think you followed my suggestion?
In this sequence:

1. Copy explorer.exe from another PC, to a USB stick.
2. Rename your existing explorer.exe to explorer.old (don't delete it, yet)
3. Copy explorer.exe from USB stick to C:\windows on your PC.
4. Reboot to see if the problem is fixed.
5. Report back.
