Today when my son re-started the computer the re-start stopped right before things started to load on the desktop. This is the error message we got:

The instruction at 0x66006041 referenced memory at 0x66006041 The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate program Click on cancel to debug program.

Neither of those options did anything so I re-started and started again in safe mode and restored it to yesterdays configuration and so far it seems to be just fine. The only thing that has updated today (before the problem) was Java and AVG. AVG's scan showed clear. My last windows update was on 10-10-07 so I am assuming nothing there did it.

A bit of history, my windows.exe kept asking for internet access and no one ever came up with a reason why, so I told ZA to deny access permently.

Any clues, Java did want to re-update, but since that was the last thing updated before the problem I denied it.

    Thanks for any help.

Windows.exe could be a trojan. Do a search for it using Windows Explorer and find out where it is located. This will tell us if it is a good thing or not.

The search didn't come up with a windows.exe, I checked to see what I had blocked and it said windows explorer. exe which the search did not find. I also did a search on explorer.exe which according to the error message is causing the current problem. Search says it's in C:\Windows\Prefetch and that is is a PF file.

Since I did the system restore back to yesterday 10/31, I haven't had a problem. I do need to know what caused the error message so it doesn't happen again. I am assuming the java update shouldn't have caused this?
    Thanks,
    Nancy

No java should not have caused this.

Go to the Prefetch folder and empty it. It is used by Windows XP to speed the boot process. Windows XP records information about each program that launches at boot and uses that information to boot faster the next time.

This folder can accumulate useless junk, especially if you change your configuration a lot. There's no harm in emptying it. Simply delete all the files in that folder; Windows will rebuild it as needed.

Ok, did that. That means I am right back where I started which is not knowing the cause of the error message:

Windows.exe The instruction at 0x66006041 referenced memory at 0x66006041 The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate program Click on cancel to debug program.

So did the restore fix it? Or is it still in the near future?

    Thanks,
    Nancy

Clearing the folder should have resolved it, hence why I suggested it.

So far so good, Thanks. I also haven't updated my Java yet. LOL

    Thanks again,
