    Alright,
I'm not much of a technical guy when it comes to fixing computer problems and errors etc. but recently i've been having some issues with my computer.

here are my comps specifications as far as i know.lol
    COMP SPECIFICATIONS :

    94mb ram
    333 mhz processor
    windows 98
    4 gig harddrive.

"before you laugh realize this is just a bare basic comp used for browsing and email"

so now to my problem, my computer has at some times become ridiculously slow (more than usual) and when I try to open anything, nothing happens, I can still work on the windows I currently have open, but can't open anything else. and then maybe 10 minutes later in the Processes/task manager window you get when you hit ctrl-alt-del it says Explorer(not responding) then when I hit "End task" everything that I had attempted to open , well opens in mass fashion. I've already done everything i could to look into the problem, AVG anti virus, Spybot search and destroy, Norton antivirus, various other computer applications, I've Defragged, scandisk, etc even went as far as to repair Explorer. but I really don't know what to do to fix this issue, other than formatting my computer.

I'm not sure if anyone knows what I should do, but any help would be appreciated.

i'd say it's your lack of ram, only try to have 1-2 (at most) windows open at a time (what i mean is limit your stuff). i still have my 1st computer (300 mhz, 4gbyte h/d, although, i think i have 128 mbyte of ram (installed more), and it's slow also. if you add more ram, you'll notice an increase. how much stuff by your clock? the more that's there, the slower it'll be. you can disable stuff that starts up, by taking it out of your startup. check your startup, start --> programs --> startup. some people like alot of stuff starting up, but most of it is not necessary!!

you can also disable stuff with msconfig (that isn't in startup above), but you have to be careful, as you might need something to run, and you've disabled it (meaning another application needed it to run). - sos

Obviously more RAM would help. I run 288mb (maximum BIOS possible) on my P2/400 W98SE laptop.

Try these 2, as well as CrapCleaner.

    Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/
    EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575

All 3 compliment each other, are free, and each finds stuff the others miss.

As mentioned in an earlier post, only run 1 anti-virus while you on the net. I would stick with AVg over Norton. I use Avast having switched, over time, from Norton, then McAfee, then AVG, now Avast.

    Try Starter from CodeStuff http://codestuff.netfirms.com/news.shtml

Much better than msconfig for gaining control over what starts up when you boot up.
You can untick (uncheck) any process but write down what you do in case you accidently close something essential. Just tick (check) it again to turn it back on.
Right click will delete item, but just check/uncheck for the time being.

I defrag daily (using Speeddisk from Norton SystemWorks) but that is not free.
How much free space have you on your 4 gig hard drive? If you do not have much free space, it is time to delete stuff, or fit a bigger hard drive, maybe as a slave drive.

We can help here, as there are still W98 users, either by choice, or by cash restraints. Bazza

I just reread your comp specs and this comp is similar.

    Dial up
    96mb ram
    233mhz processor
    win 98
    3.2 gig hardrive

To speed my comp up i run with the minimum,I'm not recomending you do this but suggesting options.I don't have an av installed, and only run firewall occasionally.I've had 1 virus in 2 years, knew i had it immediately[mail attachment] and got a removal tool from symantec.I use a safe browser, and mostly stay on the main sites.I run a free online virus scan weekly. If you have multiple users do not do this.If there is only 1 user and practice safe surfing its a viable option.Added a little speed to this old clunker.
