Spybot prompted me to a request for a new registry entry involving mrt.exe. I checked online and saw that it was a microsoft malware program, but it said it wasn't necessary to have, so I denied it. Shortly after that a windows update ran, restarted my computer, and when I logged in I get a "can't run explorer.exe" error 0xc0000022.

I'm miffed. Can anybody help me get explorer working again. Tell me what log program you'd like me to run or other info to gather and I'll be on it lickity split. Thanks in advance if you may be able to help!

that's the malicious software removal tool that usually runs when microsoft wants to check for specific malware, during windows update, actually it checks on reboot. looking into this error, it seems to also be related to the windows authenticity check. Do you think you may have blocked that as well? maybe your copy of windows needs to be verified and you may have inadvertantly blocked it? can you do ctrl-alt-del and bring up the task manager? if so, click file then run... type explorer.exe in the box.

I tried running explorer through task manager already. Sorry, should have mentioned that. It just gives me the same 0xc0000022 error.

if you can get in to the advanced options by pressing F8 at the flash screen when you first turn on the pc try selecting safe mode with command prompt.follow the prompts and logon as administrator, then when you have the command window type the following %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
this should start the system restore function then restore to a date prior to the updates.
i hope this helps good luck.

I was able to run system restore before from task manager, however, system restore is not turned on. A while ago I had a nasty virus and had to turn system restore off as I was cleaning it, must have forgot to turn it back on.

Also, I can't find how to turn it back on (I can't access Control Panel due to no start menu or explorer (when I try to get control panel from task manager I get the same error 0xc0000022 since it uses explorer as it's gui i think).

Just now though, I ran cmd from task manager as an administrator in safe mode and it says 'C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I'll try it again exactly as you said, but it's really the same thing right? I'm logged into safe mode as an administrator, pulled up command prompt and typed in what you said. I'll post back results of your directions exactly though in a moment.

Ok. The only problem was this, the path needed to be different (at least for my WindowsXP system). Instead of:

    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

    it needed to be:

    %systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe

So that got me to system restore which told me that system restore is turned off like before. When I try to turn it on (through the help, there's a link for "system" to turn it back on) I get the same error 0xc0000022.

Any other thoughts? Btw, thanks a lot for taking the time to help me with this!

(p.s. I went through the way that you had said, from safe mode with command prompt, logged in as an admin when I did this).

unfortunately, with system restore turned off, it won't help you now. run the command prompt again and type sfc /scannow

Scan completed, restarted my computer. Logged in to safemode w/ networking and here we are, still with no explorer (same error).

I've included the CBS.log file, if you want a look. It was too big for this forums file size limitations, so I split it amongst 3 txt files.

Wow, btw, my bad. I misspoke before and said I was on XP. I'm not, brainfart. I'm on Vista.

Update: Just ran msconfig from task manager and unchecked everything under startup with fingers crossed. Still no explorer, same error as original. Saw that as a possible troubleshooting method on another forum. Just posting it here so you guys know what I've already done and it's results.

Based off of the fact that I denied a mrt.exe registry value change, do you guys think that there's something I can check in the registry perhaps?

try running the command sfc /scannow from the command prompt.
to get the command prompt, in task manager, choose run, then type cmd

You told me to do that already earlier in the thread. Didn't fix it. I posted 3 text files with the log as well (had to split it up for filesize reasons) in case you wanted to take a look at it. You're not saying to do that again, are you?

When I F8 into startup options, one option I have is Repair Your Computer (or something to that effect). Gonna give that a shot. I'll post back with results.

:-o sorry bout that, i get confused easily :p

just for the heck of it, maybe you should get the scan tool for your hard drive, and run a S.M.A.R.T. check. do the extended/long test.

Np :-D So the Repair Your Computer didn't do anything but give me options like System Restore. I ran chkdsk /fix from command prompt as well, then restarted. Nuttin. Error xc0000022 Explorer doesn't want to play today and would rather watch you pull your hair out. :(
