which file extension do your videos have to be in to put them on an svcd? And, once they have that extension, can you just drag them on to a cd or do you have to use a program? I had an avi movie that I dragged onto a cd, and it did not work in my friends xbox. I converted it to mpg, but I want to know whether this is the right extension, and whether I have to use a program or just drag-and-drop it before I go and waste another cd.

SVCD's are burnt onto a CD in a specific way. They contain an MPEG 2 video stream and an MPEG 1 or 2 audio stream.

Just converting files and burning them, or drag n' drop, won't work as you have discovered.

Most decent burning program will easily do them, for example Nero.

There are free programs available from here like CDBurner XP Pro or DeepBurner, but I can't say with certainty if they support this format.
