    I want a do-it-yourself external hard disk.

Can I just buy a WD Caviar internal SATA drive, an external 3.5" enclosure with SATA and USB 2.0, install the drive in the enclosure, and plug the whole thing into a USB port?

Is it that simple? No software, just enclosure + drive + cable?

    Yes it is that simple.
Some HDD enclosures need an external power source (plug into a regular wall outlet) but most draw their power from the USB2.0 port.

    Sweet, thanks very much.

I like your sig a lot, except I recommend changing ALL parameters then guessing which one did the trick...

...because parlor games are more fun than troubleshooting ...
