External drive - blue screen

    I have an external usb hard drive that has, during the past 6 months I have owned it, been a bit difficult, only recognised some of the time when plugged in. Now when I connect it to a usb socket, a blue screen with white writing flashes up, far too fast for the message to be read, and my PC re-boots itself. I wonder if a re-format of the drive might help but since it closes my pc down when I plug it in, I am unable to get to the format function.
    Any suggestions?

    BTW, I forgot to mention that my system is XP Pro SP2.

    Hi

    What you could do is to use BlueScreenView app in this thread HERE to collect the minidump file and attach it to your next post then we can see what the faulting file maybe (instrutions on how to attach are in the guide)

    You could also try booting to Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and see if it still happens, do you haev many other USB devices plugged in, unplug all bar any keyboard and mouse and try again, as the HDD maybe drawing too much power.

    Try an different USB port and perferably one around the back connected to the motherboard and not a hub or front mounted port.

    Hi, tried safe mode, no dice tried mobo usb, back and front and separate poweed USB ports;
    This is a .Doc file of the minidump and I am attempting also to attach copy of "minidump" file. (Sorry, attachments doesn't seem to accept .dmp liles)
