I use external hard drives as a backup. Normally, I buy new Hard Drives and install them in USB external cases. Format and I am done.. I just bot a new Seagate 320GB ATA and although the computer recognizes its presence in Device Manager, it does not assign it a drive letter and so I can't access it. Have tried it on 3 different computers. Does anyboody have any thoughts?

Have you formatted it yet? Right click My Computer and click manage. Go to disk management and you should see the drive there. You'll need to format it (NTFS) and it will ask you for a drive letter.
