external drives - one-touch vs. ???

Yesterday I posted which is the best (i.e. least crashing) external hard drive in the 200-300 (or a bit more) gb range. However, doing some additional reading last night I need to present my scenerio for comments.

I would like to take DVD's I have of family movies (about 30) and put on a hard drive. I would then like to copy and/or edit to blank DVD's.

Question: Is a one touch the wrong way to go? I guess I am asking what is the best way to create say 30 separate folders (pluse all my mp.3 backups in separate artist folders) on an external harddrive to review and copy/paste?

Most all hard drives are the same. Some people will say that one brand is better than the other, but barring a few exceptions, they all have similar failure rates. As for Maxtor's OneTouch drives, the only difference is that they include some software that makes it easy for you to backup files from your computer to the hard drive.

For what you want to do, it won't really make a difference. Get the most inexpensive drive that you can in the size that you want.

Check out the Sunday ads each week at Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Office Max, etc. It seems there is always at least one external hard drive on sale.

 

thanks, Wyatt_Earp. I did that for the CompUSA ad Sunday but the bad reviews scared me off the Maxtor 250 gb external hard drive. If appears the recent purchases had very short term failure rates (2 weeks to 2 months).

I have a 160 gig maxtor one touch, and have friends with the 250 gig model, no of us have had any problems with them, i have had my one touch for about a year now no trouble.
