Since the USB ports on the FIOS MI424W actiontech routers are not really good for anything but charging a device. Can I hang a USB External Hard drive off one of the routers ethernet ports using an ethernet to USB adapter?

    TIA - Brian

    Hi Brian

Not of hand thought of using the ethernet port for an external drive apart from NAS drives. Luckily my routers USB port accepts external drives, but its not the same as your router and as you likely know not all router USB ports accept data, its a firmware thing.

Looking up a bit more on this it seems hooking a USB external drive to a router is not as simple as you'd think, the RJ45 doesn't carry power like a USB port, so your ext HDD needs power, so possible route I read up on (advise you to do the same) is to use a NAS adapter to connect to your router and then they come with a power adapter and a few USB ports. The next thing is to map your external HDD via the adapter to Windows

Networks are not my thing but no doubt someone will be along to advise more.
