Hi, new to the forum, first post.

I recently bought an external USB hard disk enclosure from E-Bay, and also a second-hand 120 GB Maxtor Hard Disk.

I connected it all up and hooked it up to my PC, which recognised it and installed the correct drivers.

All weel and good so far, but.....

When I check in "My Computer", it only lists my original hard drive.

I've had a scout about on various forums, and all advice seems to be: start -> control panel -> admin tools -> computer management -> disk management, and then format the drive.

When I follow this advice, "Disk Management" only shows my old HD, but when I check in: Device Manager -> Disk Drives, it shows the new USB drive, but I can't format it from here.

I've tried changing the jumper settings on the USB HD around with no joy.

I checked my old HD (which hasn't been touched since I bought the PC), and the jumper settings are set to "CS Enabled".

    I'm running Windows XP (SP2).

    So my questions are:

    1) Can anyone help?
    2) (Sorry if this sounds basic) Can I change the jumper settings on my original HD from "CS Enabled", to "Master" without any loss of data, fireworks etc.

    Thanks.

    1. possibly.......... try hooking up the external HD to the internal cable as a SLAVE and format it from their?

    2. Yes should be fine

    Hi,

Hooked up the new drive inside my PC with my original drive set to "Master" and the new drive set to "Slave". When I switched on the PC I got a black screen saying "Operating system not found".

I checked my settings and tried again, with the same results.

I removed the new drive, and tried again with an older 20gb drive (which I know works) in the slave position and everything booted up as normal, and the drive was available through My Computer.

Really flumoxed - I'm pretty sure this new drive is jiggered, but I'd be interested in getting it working.

    Any suggestions?
