Ok, I am gonna buy me a new external Harddrive soon. Seems like all I can find is one with usb. While My case does have fi re wire support. Its a custom build.

Is it better to buy just a enclosure for the external, then go buy my own hard drive? (I THINK you can do that??)

Or should I just buy the whole setup with the harddrive??

Have a couple of cheep walmart external usb harddrives and Find them handy. So I thought maybe a bigger one may be just what I want. Any help is greatly apreciated.

Yeh, any 3.5 inch enclosure will hold any 3.5 hdd!

I would go for whichever option is the cheapest for you.

Does the new hdd have to be portable? if not go far an internal one, they will be cheaper and will mean less cables.

My one enclosure has a choice of USB or firewire. If you prefer firewire, just check what the enclosure has.
Since internal hard drives are cheaper than externals, you might be able to save a few pennies buying an internal hd and putting it into an enclosure.

Thank you guys. No the harddrive does not have to be portable. My Line of thinking is. If I just buy the enclosure, All I need to do is simply pop in a new hard drive if the old one fails.

I have been looking around at new egg a bit. Have not found a enclosure that I am happy with . From the looks of it so far, It appears that buying just the enclosure is something not to many do, does not seem like you get many choices.

If someone has a link to a good one that would sure help. Until then I will continue to look around. If no luck, Then I will simply buy just the external hard drive and leave it at that. I Thank you all kindly.

I have two enclosures. Both of mine support 5.25" drives as well as 3.5" and 2.5". At the moment, I have a CD burner in one enclosure and a DVD player/CD burner in the other. But I can also put in a desktop or a notebook hard drive, provided it is IDE and not SATA.

One brand I bought was BYTECC.

my drive is silver plastic so it does not look like that on the outside.
