External HD backup hangs all day

Hi, I'm helping a church with their external Western digital my book external HD. I installed the W.Digital Retrospect 2.0 backup software and set it up for weekly backups of 1 desktop folder along with 1 user folder The backup began as scheduled but ran all day, the corner icon stating "back-up Local c in progress" finally I just disconnected it from the XP desktop because it was using too much resources, any advice on what to do? I emailed support, but have not had any replies.:confused

 

Not sure what the problem is but if you cannot get any satisfaction from WD, then consider wiping/formating the external HDD and installing Syncback (freeware version) on the pc's main HDD.

Make sure the path is correct. First check the path in My Computer. You should see like a C: and D: ect... If the path is correct and still not working try this.

When the external hard drive is plugged in right click on My Computer and select Manage, select Disk management (or storage I cant remeber). That should show you all the drives that are connected. Select the external hard drive and right click it.
Select Change Drive Letter and Paths,
Select Change
In the Pull Down box pick a letter.

Change the path to the external harddrive in the program to write to whatever drive letter you designated for it.

Sometimes those external hard drives don't work because of the drive letter assigned to them F: D: E: and so on..

 

I should have said in my post, changing drive path letters can be somewhat harmful to your info. Do it at your own risk. I've not had a problem with doing it in the past, but I do know that problems can happen.
