I plugged in my external HD to my laptop which prompted me to scan the disk for errors which i did, about half way through it got stuck so i canceled the scan.

Now when i try to access the disk it says I:\ is not accessable Access is denied.

When i try to scan the disk for errors it say The disk check could not be performed because windows can't access the disk. Screen dump attached

I have tried restarting the disk but get the same result, i have a lot of data on the disk so any ideas of how to at least recover the data would be greatly appreciated

What details does Windows Disk Management show for the drive? Right-click (My) Computer > Manage.

Whilst you are in Windows Management, you could access the System logs and look for any associated error messages/drivers failing to load.

    Hope this helps

Disk manager shows the drive as 'healthy (primary partition) but it is showing 298GB free of 298GB which i hope is not true as it was full before. Properties on the other hand shows 0bytes of 0bytes free, i am assuming this is just an anomily as windows cannot fully access the drive.

When i look under the device manager it shows 'This device is working properly'

Event log has multiple entries for the drive obviously for each time i have tried to scan it all showing:

    Log Name: System

Looks like you have mbr/partition table issues ie corruption

Can use TestDisk as suggested by satrow, or use BiNG which is more friendly and will probably do the job. Follow the instructions in this thread, to include trying to save the data.
