    Hello,

I have bought an external HDD and when I connect it to the usb it cant initilize.

I tried to force it to initilize through disk management and i get a message "access denied"

Moreover I can't connect it directly to MB's Sata or IDE because it only has 12 little pins which I don't know what they are or how they called and the mini usb.

Can anyone help me with that because i need to restore many files from there?

    HDD characteristics

    Western Digital
    500GB
    SATA

Can you right click the drive in Windows explorer and click "format"?

I'm pretty much going off no information here but I'll make some suggestions anyway cause I've had a couple of beers. Try other USB ports on the computer for starters, as in, try all of them, and unplug any unnecessary USB devices while doing this. Try a different USB cable if you have one as quite often certain cables work better than others. But I assume this is a brand new unit that came with it's own cable so that's not likely the problem.

    Re: External HDD cant initialize

The fact is that since the disk wont initialize i cant view it on windows explorer or do any actions-configuration on it, like "format".

I assume i need to find a way to initialize it first. But how?

The only way to initialise it is in disk management as you have already tried.

Do you mean the actual hard drive itself only has a 12 pin interface, and not the case? I have never seen that before.

Yes, apart from the usb ofcourse.

    The exact model is WD500BMVV

If you google it, its the first image that pops up.

Oh, I forgot about those :-o

My suggestion would be that as it is new, it is most likely one of the few faulty drives that make it out of the factory. I would take it back for a swap.

Any suggestions about how to export data from it?

If you managed to get data on it and the controller has failed, which is the most likely scenario if it can't be initialised, you could try swapping the controller board with one from the same make & model of drive. But personally I would just say unless you don't have the data anywhere else and it is important, it would be a waste of time trying.
