External HDD

Hi

Some months ago I acquired a TrekStor HDD and decided to put it to use two days ago. I tried to format the beast only to find the process will not complete.

I tried on two occasions using slightly different methods with similar outcome.
Once I got the message saying Windows unable to complete formatting and another time it said that the format did not complete successfully.

Is anyone able to advise as to a possible cause for the formatting process not completing successfully and maybe put me on the right path to resolving this problem.

I tried to use prog suggested but it did not resolve problem. H/ever prob was solved at a later stage. Tks

 

Pleased to see you have found a way to resolve it.

It would be appreciated if you would let me know what did solve it for you, as these problems often need different fixes, and it is useful for anyone else with the same problem, if you reply with the method you used.

Yes, my apologies, but I thought you had tried that, as you tried to format before, -- the hard drive has to be ' initiated first' (activated ) - for newbies, I usually suggest to --right click My Computer, click manage, go down to Disk management, click, and you will see the drive listed as unallocated. If as Henri, found, the disk is not activated, (Windows calls this initiated),the steps to take are - right click on the drive, a drop down list will give you options, if initiate, or, activate is listed click to do this first, then create partition, then format .
The link showed setting up for a primary partition, in NFTS, or, FAT32, but from disk management you can also delete a partition, if you are reformatting an old drive.
