external number pad

    hope someone can help
    I have a hp dv5000 has a fn key that turns on and off numlock that controls the numbers on the alphabet keys when I plug in an external number pad and turn on the num lock both the number pad and the keys produce numbers
    how do I disable the keys from producing numbers and still have the external number pad work
    so far I tried frys tech support and micro centers both have spent aprox 3 hrs with no luck noone has ever encountered this
