Hi, so I accidentally unplugged my external ssd while it was writing. Now windows wont recognize it. I looked in device manager and it doesnt recognize it. I have a bunch of backup files on there i really dont want to lose. Is there anyway to repair the drive withought losing data?

my only thought here is to try a different operating system, and see if it is recognized by it.
if you have a friend who has an apple computer, plug in your external ssd and see if it mounts.
apple computers can read and copy from window NTFS drives, natively.
or you could download a linux distro, boot your computer with it, and see if linux can mount your external ssd.
like osX, linux can read and copy from window's formatted hard drives.
no other brilliant ideas off hand. good luck with it.

Update: So i booted into a live distro of ububtu, and my external drive still wasnt recognized. I decided to pop the drive out of my laptop and replaced it with my external one. Booted into ubuntu again and boom theres all my files. Looks like it has a corrupted file system. So now im gonna have to find a big enough drive to backup everything and reformat. Is there a way to fix the file system on the drive without losing whats on there? I would just run chkdsk but windows wont recognize it and from my understanding i cant run the linux equivalent of chkdsk on a ntfs drive. Anyway around this?

Chkdsk can be run from an administrative command prompt. Type "chkdsk X: /f /r" with "X" being the drive letter of the disk you want to run it on. Not sure if it will cure your problem, but that will run chkdsk on it. Of course this would have to be ran within a windows environment.
