    Hi

My computer intermittently hangs on shutdown. The only indication of what might be wrong is that when hanging the led on the external HDD continually flashes.

I've left it for hours and it stays flashing and the computer won't complete shutdown until it stops.

    Thanks for any help

    Uli

Scan your hard drive for bad sectors, the most likely culprit. Under windows explorer right click and choose properties, tools, check for errors. I would back up your PC immediately in case your heading for hard drive failure. Let us know how you make out.

    Hi Major Attitude

Thanks for your reply. I did as you suggested and apparently the disk is fine. The scan did however stick for a long time (about 30mins) at one point and was set to fix bad sectors.

What do you say to waiting to see if this has fixed the problem?

    Thanks

    Uli

Have you cleaned the drive and defragged? CCLeaner or Windows built in drive cleanup works. If you have not defragged in a long time, or ever this could be the culprit.

    Hi

I have cleaned the drive using ccleaner and defragged it using Mydefrag.

My computer has not stalled since though the problem was intermittent to begin with.

I guess it's just a question of waiting?

    Thanks

    Uli

Back it up, you have an issue coming, just a matter of what. I always keep an external drive, DVD and second hard drive plus an image so i can restore clean in minutes and see if the problem repeats.

    Hi Major Attitude

I think I misunderstood your instructions and defragged the wrong drive.

I have since defragged my system drive (never defreagged till then - new) since when the problem has gone.

Thanks for your help, it's nice to have my laptop working again.

I love a happy ending. Be sure to clean your drive and defrag it on a regular basis. For most people monthly is sufficent. Your drive will thank you :)
