I have a cdrw drive that was removed from another computer . I've tried to install it several times to function as a cdrw. It will function as a cd-rom drive. The issue is it has no obvious manufactor info say like an hp drive has the name on the lable. The model:5224W serial no 99B1L1205131100040PWF000. the only sure fire name located on the drive is AMOCZA mfg. DATE 3/2003. 52*24*52speed.
I'm running on window's ME 256 mem. 40gbdrive . I'm learning now because in 6mos I'd like to give a shot at building my first baby from the case-up. Thanks in advance for any help i may receive :)

Try going into the device manager and expanding the tab for the optical drives. It should tell you details of the manufacturer and also a FW version

The drive is listed as ATAPI CD-RW 52*24
    Firmware revision F.FZ
Boxes checked in settings are disconnect, auto insert notification, and DMA.
Under drivers states no files are required or have been installed.

Leo65, I am not sure I understand what it is that you need. Did you want more info as regard driver manufacturer and firmware or should I be interpreting your comment that << I've tried to install it several times to function as a cdrw. It will function as a cd-rom drive>> as implying that there is a problem in that you cannot burn CDRs.....

The checkboxes under 'Settings' are correct.

Windows has correctly detected the drive and under the 'general' tab (next to setting) there will be a comment that 'this device is working properly'.

As regards getting this drive to burn you will need 'burning software' in the form of 'EZCD Creator', 'Nero' or such and then off you go.

You should check to see whether this program is on your pc. Go to control panel and check in the add/remove box.

you might try a program called everest which will tell you all the information you need about your computer ... your drive might just be "generic" and not be made by brand name company so you may not be able to find the company at all ... but the default drivers are all most people use anyway ... so if it works I wouldn't be too concerned

Most of the flash updates for CDRW's allow them to detect more types/different types of media. As for needing a "ripper" to burn CD's, you don't need one if you have CD burning software installed as mentioned in the previous replies. :)
