I have a 10 year old Micron Millenium that still runs Windows 98, on dial up, and it will be several months before I can replace it. I am as far from being tech-savy as you can get. If I were to get access to high speed cable internet, would it even work on my machine?

Yup! And assuming that your network card is using DHCP, it should be VERY easy to setup.

Make sure the modem/router that comes from you cable company is Win98 compatible - you will need win98 second edition for USB access. An Ethernet modem would be better. You can add an ehternet card very cheaply if you don't have one in the pc.

I have a 9 year old micron notebook which had 98SE on it. I use something like this http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/SearchDetail.asp?productID=12715
to attach the notebook to my network. I also have high speed cable internet through Comcast since 2004. I don't take it on the internet much (it operates at 366MHz, LOL) but it works well, but slowly when I do.
I've also upgraded my notebook to windows 2000. At least 2000 is still being patched so I know it is safer than 98SE for surfing.
