Extremely slow broadband speed, I have tried everything

I am trying to fix my friends laptop with no luck; It is extremely slow downloading.

It's 34.2 kbs and downloading at4.28kbs (according to the online test) The same cable (Comcast) connection is fine on my desktop (1.6mps.) I have run every virus/spware program possible. When I call my isp they say everything looks good on their end, and it must be the laptop.

It's a IBM thinkpad with XP, Celeron CPU 2.00GHz, 112MB RAM, 15.6 GB

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If you installed the Febuary update for XP w/SP2 it can slow down your settings for MCU, TCP, etc. might be a place to look. I had a simular problem and finally found some info on it after searching through the web. There is a prgram that may help with it, called TCP optimizer which worked for me. Another thing I noticed is if you do an online speed test, be aware of the number of hops, this can kill any speed. Hope this helps.
