My friend is using an AMD 64 3500+ and he claims he has no thermal paste on his processor at all.. That stunned me i was thinking he was lieing but apperantly he isnt. Here is a screenshot of the temps hes getting. Im having him try everst home edition. in everst he has a readout of a cpu temp of 32 celecius... So what is up with the 180 degree CPU Diode Temp?

Not a clue on the 180c temp!!!!!
32c is about right, my 3200+ idles at 25c-ish.

I haven't heard of a cpu diode temp to be honest, but give Everest a try, and also Speedfan.

I think the reason for the high temps is because you're using MBM. WHich was discontinued shortly after the release of the A7N asus boards. In other words it was discontinued before the socket 939 boards were out. Since you're running a socket 939 chip it means you are using software that was never design to read the temps from that motherboard and you are getting false readings.

In short. Get yourself a diffrent program, because unless MBM was started back up and I missed it, it shouldn't work properly with your motherboards sensors.

Edit: The last MBM update was 18 June 2004, it's still discontinued. SO this means, never use MBM with an atholon 64 chip, you're readings are likely to be incorrect.

PS: mcadam, the diode temp is the CPU temp you're used to seeing. Mother baord monitor just lists it that way. Which is technically correct but confusing if you haven't used MBM before.

I have found motherboard monitor the most accurate

    http://majorgeeks.com/Motherboard_Monitor_d311.html

check for updates here for maximum compatibility with your motherboard

    http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

All boxed a64's come with thermal paste pre applied, unless he scraped it off or used an aftermarket hsf it will have thermal paste on,even without thermal paste the temp wouldnt be that high the computer simply wouldnt boot, its obviously a software prob, you will just have to find a monitor that reports the correct temp :)

I think you missed Coco's post about MBM (Motherboard Monitor) being outdated and incompatible wiht AMD64 ;)

tell your friend not to worry, Athlon64's run pretty cool, my 3500+ and stock HSF do just fine and dont reach above 40c under Load

My bad  I missed it alright weird I dont know how  ,I have a temp reading prob with my cpu aswell, every so often speedfan, sandra and everest will read a temp of around 200c and will report temps sometimes 5c higher than they actually are, this is known prob with neo2 boards which I havnt seen a solution for yet,the most accurate temp reading I have found has been mbm5 as it is always on the money,I set my cpu temp to winbond diode 2 and voila!

Not much help I know but you are right IYTC when I try different motherboard settings in mbm5 like the generic nf3 diode layout I get strange readings like the symptoms posted

I'll crawl back under my rock now

Rikky, what settings/sensors are you using on your Neo2 with MBM?

I have a neo2 platinum as well, and I havent fooled much with MBM as I'm not overclocking right now, but when I did try, there was no Neo2 listed (obviously) and i couldnt decide which one to try

sure M8 :) I'm using MBM5370,next everything until it installs the files then the configuration wizard will start its here you click update, mine downloaded updates from 2 different mirrors,I missed it the first time so I ran the wizard again and it downloaded them from this url http://users.pandora.be/ovan so there are still updates out there I'm not sure who's doing the updating

Then just a case of scrolling down to msi
    k8N neo 2 platinum
    all revisions

There isnt a generic nforce 3 setting as all manufacturers put their diodes on different components,I got mixed up with clockgen its a while since I installed it.

    :)
