i visit lots of FB pages with various levels of info locked, but occasionally i see one which had "send xxx a message" and "add as friend" missing. how do they do this?! i don't see it ANYWHERE in the privacy/security settings.

moreover, how does this make sense? i assume it means contact is limited to "friends", but unless you can send an "add" request, how do they ever get on the LIST?!

i always thought "send xxx a message" and "add as friend" were OUTSIDE the privacy options. guess not.

    :confused

here's one w "add as friend" but no "send her a msg": http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000547722326

nor does the add button itself provide the usual "add a personal message..."

and i think i've seen "send her a msg" w/out "add as friend" on some other pages. well, at least in either of those 2 cases, there's SOME way to get the person's attn, but the link in my prior post had NEiTHER, right?

i mean, when u say uv never seen that before, are u indeed seeing it (last link) the same way i am?

i realize a block against me, personally, could be skewing the results. then again, these aren't people i know, so that seems unlikely.

i thought maybe MINORS...but a look at some other pages indicates that even they have "add" and "send msg" same as usual.

Link in post 2 shows Info page only. Dead end after that.

Types like you show links to in post 4, I won't even try to contact.
Have had some send me a friend request. When I go to the page they link, it says something about some naked pictures they have taken and need to register to view. I immediately block all requests from those senders.

naked pix?! good god, no. these are friends of a friend. not ones i know directly (hence, can't imagine any sort of "personal" block), but ones w common link re: classmates, college, etc. and they weren't ppl sending me "hey, there" emails either (yeah, i get those too, but)...these were people i plucked out of the friendlists of ppl i actually KNOW!!

good lord. what abt that last one led u to believe she was...um..."shady"?!

    Hi

Would need to click the +1 Add as Friend button next to their name, to add as friend and if they accept then you can contact them, Facebook added alot of protection for users a while back so you can limit who contacts or can view your information.

well, that explains ONE of the two examples, but what of the one without even "add as friend"?

and even for the add as friend example, why can't i add a MSG, like i did in the past? is it the case that this option disappears if they've turned u down in the past?

  10. hrlow2

    hrlow2 MajorGeek

    Can't be that.
I've never given those an invitation to be turned down.

huh? don't quite understand the second line there. meaning uv never given anyone a second chance, once they've rejected u once?

iv had someone reject me out of hand, then b/c of a MSG (saying "hey, it's me, so-and-so") accept me on a later request. this looks to be impossible now.

its to do with this page i think (that you can't add as friend or send a message etc) they're settings for each profile that you can find:
pivacy settings> basic directory Info, click 'view settings'.

For them to get friends, they would need to add you, not you add them. I have a few friends like this. If you're desperate to add them, send a message to a mutual friend that might pass on the request or speak to them in person if possible.

    Hi

AS I mentioned the changes to FB, are wide and the article I linked to highlights some, runningcart has it correct, information can be changed and the first link you left us, has that user not wanting anyone to add her as a friend, if you know her then ask her to add you.

That one is a limited access message, so she has many of the privacy options enabled.

recently closed my FB account but I do recall there being a setting where if you didn't want messages sent from just anybody then you could apply it.

OK, i get it now. msgs are, like u said, impossible for such users (who have set msgs to "from friends only"). the add as friend option, otoh, will REAPPEAR if u have a mutual friend. that is, it is not the case that they must INITIATE the add; u just need to have some common link.

Googling on one's name usually comes UP with some of the mutual friends, so even if u DON'T know them, there's a good chance u can charm your way in thru a route like this. Not that the target person will ultimately "add" you, but if u get one of these other friends to do it, at least the "add" button will reappear.

So u don't have to quite "ask" said mutual friend -- as halo suggests -- but u do need to befriend them first.

And I'm not sure what youngboy's last post is all about. Isn't that what I said myself?!

Thats called cyberstalking and what FB are trying to stop, if your not a friend then why should they add you.

Never said ask a mutual friend?
    What I did say was
Meaning if you know her in person ask her to add you.

I just want to say that, I hate when "friends of friends" friend request me on FB. Just because we have a mutual friend does not mean I want to be friends with someone I don't know or barely know or never talk to. With that said, the person who does not have a link to add as a friend or even to message, obviously feels the same way hence the strict privacy settings. I know many people who feel this way.

Like Halo said, If she is a close friend then ask her in person or if you have her email then email her and ask her to add you.

P.S- I wasn't attacking you and sorry if I sound a bit snarky.. it's late and well this is one thing that ticks me off a lot.

Will have to say that the "mutual friends" part is OK if, IF, you are playing some of the games there where success is judged by how many people are on your list.
I have many that are there that I have never seen and probably never will.
Much as things are here.Never met anyone from here in person, but like to think of everyone here as friends.

    Very simple question.
The amount of neighbors you have can control how far you advance in Farmville.
Also the types of items you can purchase and use.
The response was about to make me ..no, I won't go there.

I dont play any FB games but I do have similar ones on my iphone/ipod touch, which one is Racing Live, where its a street racing game, you buy real estate to allow you to buy more cars and equipement, stronger you and your crew are the more races you all win.

I was just ribbing her :-D but in all honesty, MG really won't yield you a lot neighbors. If you really would like to add more your best option would be to go to Zynga's Farmville forum, they have their own "add me" section.

I am so clueless. I have never heard of Farmville.:confused I have to say it doesn't sound like a place I'd like to live though...is there a Cityville? :-D

and Facebook...I'm dreading the hell out of having to create a fricken account when we allow our oldest to get one (she is 13). The requirement will be that she will have the strictest setting, and I will be her 'friend'. I'm not sure I'll have any others, nor do I want any. LOL

Actually, you might want to get your Facebook account now, and learn the site. Unless you know the system better than her, she'll be the one with the power to do whatever she wants, and there will be absolutely nothing you can do stop her from connecting with whoever she wants to.

For the most part, I let my kids be kids and make mistakes. We have open conversations about everything. I am not nosey nor intrusive. I am a parent, however. I'm also a parent who is extremely knowledgeable about computers and the internet. They know this. I think they even think I can do more than I can (LOL). I have never had one reason to not trust them online and have never, other than not allowing them laptops and having the desktop downstairs and in plain view, monitored them online with software.

I have huge problems with communities such as Facebook though. It gives kids an even higher sense of privacy than other aspects of online activities. It can also do permanent damage as far as real life goes (lost jobs, college admittance taken away, kicked out of the school they are in)....all of which I have seen first hand with people. That is not a chance I'm willing to take. Kids act first and think later...it's hardwired into their brains.

That being said, I won't be on much (if at all), but the simple fact that I can be on will be a deterrent. It's a door that may be closed but it's not locked. It's the same as their bedrooms. While I don't go in and search them (because I've never needed to), the door is open if there is a need. As a parent, I wouldn't hesitate.

As far as I'm concerned, Facebook is not a journal of private thoughts which I would never dream of invading. It is a public online venue.

The above quote applies to many parents sadly. I wouldn't count myself one of them...nor do I think any here would.

All that being said:-D, I would more than welcome an introductory tutorial from you, Mims.

Hi Laura, I did post a reply but the forum 503'd on me and it was lost.

So my reply was a continuence ofn Mimsy's great offer and to add, get yours and her account now and get used to it but make sure she adds you as a friend (even get her to add another close friend of yours who may already be on FB as well), so you can keep an eye on the types of friends she is making as likely you know most of them from school and local, my sister did this with my neice as it was the only way she was getting a FB account.

I think I will take Mimsy's advice for sure and get one soon. lol...I hate the idea of FB though, that's the problem. The rest of my family (my mom, bro, both sisters, etc etc) are all active on it, so she'll have plenty of 'friends'. She is very close to them all, so I don't think it'll be an issue as far as that goes.

    It'll be an adventure. LOL

Facebook is, when you get right down to it, a community like any other. There are good people, bad people, there are traps and there are advantages, and as in every other community, it's up to the user to learn how to avoid the bad people and the traps, and get the most out of it.

The important thing is to keep in mind that it's public. Facebook is the poster girl for our lack of privacy in "the internet age".

It's also a ridiculously easy way for me to stay in touch with my friends and family in Sweden.

Just PM me when you have your account created. It will be much easier to walk you through the settings than trying to explain them when you can't look at them. I'll be on the laptop all day, and I have absolutely nothing planned until I have to be at work tomorrow. :)
