A friend of mine's Facebook account has been hacked. I've advised him to change his password but he doesn't. Anyway, that's his problem.

I have some other friends who communicate with him via Facebook. Would it be advisable for us to avoid interacting with him until his account is secure again? Can it cause us any problems?

It would be advisable to use Bitdefender app for Facebook to scan your profiles, and tighten up your security settings. You can change your friend's updates on your facebook, by setting for "Only Important", by clicking on the arrow to the right of the person's name, when you are viewing your newsfeed.
