    Hi,
Just curious about something. Let's say someone post defamation against someone on Facebook, and revealing his private info like adress or phone number. All from a fake account and from a public wifi. The victim file a complaint to the police. Police will then MAYBE ask Facebook to reveal the ip, after finding out that the user name and email used to verify the account didn't give them much. Will Facebook reveal it and how much time it'll take them to reveal it? Do the police need a court order?
And by the time Facebook will reveal the ip.. The cctv cameras of this place won't save what happened and who visited at the day of the publishment. Basiclly a loophole criminals can use?

I would expect Facebook to use data protection act & not reveal details unless a court order is given.
If this has happened the you will receive better advice via a Solicitor/Lawyer than here.

Online companies will not just give law enforcement user account information. They would need a subpoena or court order...and even then I've heard stuff about Apple refusing to unlock phones with a subpoena.

Fyi...IP addresses are not going to necessarily allow any one to locate someone. Most people have accounts with an internet provider who cycles through IP addresses....and that is if they are at home. Police are most likely also not going to take any time at all as far as a scenario you laid out. You certainly don't need a public wifi...that's for sure. A VPN works as well and is easy to find one online that anyone can use.

It's not a loophole, it's a modern day fact and one that isn't going to go away any time soon that I can see. There are way too many ways to hide yourself online, which is why people are scammed all the time and nothing much is able to be done.

Totally agree with this. Hiding online has so many ways.

(This is a reply to both Laura R. + Goddess Bastet.)
Actually, they can + do reveal this info all the time.
    1. They no longer need court orders, only FISA warrants.
    2. They don't even bother with FISA warrants.
    3. They routinely share stuff voluntarily.
    4. Government has browbeat all ISPs, major retail + social-media services, etc to install government monitoring software/hardware.
    5. Not only social media posts, not only in the US, but all posts, phone calls, emails + texts world-wide have been stored at the NSA's new facility in Utah (the one Wired magazine exposed a bunch of years ago) since they built it.
    6. They used server farms with NVIDIA high-end GPUs in a cloud/artificial-intelligence setup to crack 256-bit encryption. They succeeded by brute force. (If I remember correctly, this was last year.)
Even the CEO of Sun Mircosystems said publicly a few years ago, "You have no privacy. Get over it."

I can't say I was specifically aware of that, but it's not surprising.

I'm still fairly certain Facebook, or law enforcement, would pay zero attention to the original scenario, though. People spoof emails, phone numbers, etc. for phishing and other illegal stuff and nothing gets done about it. Unless you have done, or plan to do something incredibly egregious, the government could care less about your accounts. I'm not saying it's right that they do any of the above, just that they don't care if you Dox someone or defame them as stated above.

It doesn’t surprise me to hear this.

Why not just start using a VPN? This hides your real IP address. Opera has a built-in VPN that you can turn on or off at any time. That way, your own IP address isn't being recorded. If you are using the Facebook app on a mobile, you'll need a desktop VPN, and there's a lot of free ones out there.

Law enforcement need's a court order in order to get some ones information like that.

Keep in mind, I don't like the fact that Facebook doesn't let you use a name other than your real one. Now, I get why they are like that, but anything you link to can be traced back to your profile.

Then perhaps you shouldn't post it if you are afraid.

I don't really care much for it. I just browse it for to seek out extra work in low budget films.

Maybe I am confused. If you link to something and put it on your profile....it is already on your profile. No tracing involved.

How does Facebook know what your real name is?
