I bought a new router yesterday. It's a Linksys WRT160Nv3. After setting everything up with my PC that's connected with a cable to the router, everything worked great. I then went and connected the rest of the family's laptops and computers wirelessly (which took maybe... 15 minutes or so?) and everything was ok, so I sat down at my computer and went on Facebook. At first, everything was ok... Another 15 minutes later, however, suddenly, any Facebook page I go to would redirect itself to Myspace...

I already did a Spybot scan and an AVG scan last night and it seemed to have fixed the problem, but suddenly about 20 minutes ago it started doing it again... Can someone please help me out??! I'm worried that it might be something with the new router, in which case I'd have to go back and exchange for another one...

I'll give those steps a try. I personally don't use myspace so I'm not sure whether or not it's the legit site... the URL actually says "myspace.com/blah" when it redirects so I'm guessing it is legit? Anyhow, the problem doesn't always happen... About 30 minutes after I posted, it seemed to resolve itself and is still fine right now...

    Hey Kids,

The problem is your Linksys/Cisco router. Rather than smashing it, do this:

    1) Do an ipconfig and you'll see that your first DNS server is 192.168.1.1
    2) write down the last two DNS server IP addresses
    3) go to your network adapter settings and change the TCP/IP DNS properties from automatic to manual and add your two IP addresses
    4) verify the changes by typing ipconfig /all
(confirm that 192.168.1.1 is no longer in the list)
    5) make this change on every computer on your network

    * now you can stop searching for viruses or malware that don't exist ;)

So what is it about the router that is causing the redirect? You told us what the problem is not, and how to solve, but not exactly what the problem is.

    A kid ;)

The problem is a firmware issue with Linksys on multiple models of their routers. There is currently still no updated firmware that fixes this though there are plenty of posts about it for at least a year.

The fix is easy enough. Put the DNS servers into the computer instead of relying on the router to provide it, instructions already provided by Technochick. Slightly annoying but easy to overcome.

Would be much more easily overcome if Linksys would fix the firmware.
Linksys/Cisco is really popular but i've had too many ridiculous annoyances with them to ever buy one again.

Still doesn't explain WHY the router redirects facebook to myspace. is it because when it cant find facebook it goes on a search and myspace is the closest thing to it? why that connection?

Other users are reporting redirects to other sites, not just myspace, though myspace has come up several times.

That's probably a question for Linksys. What in their firmware is causing the DNS problems, not flushing, redirecting to sites, especially myspace. Did they test it with myspace and have something stay stuck in their firmware? Did they have their firmware hacked? Did some disgruntled employee think it was funny on their way out? They have a glitch in their DNS handling programming. I think if anyone knew exactly why and pointed it out to Linksys, they might actually fix after a year.

thats interesting, I've never had that happen. but i did switch to ddwrt firmware a while ago. Is there a recurring ip that is getting stuck in the first dns slot? would explain alot.

also, i've started using dns provided by google, in my first 2 spots, and my isp's as the 3rd. with the couple of dns problems comcast has had recently, i didn't want to get stuck.
