Facebook: What's the Buzz?

is there some way to send a buzz/bell in FB chat, a la ^G in MM/YM?

 

I don't use facebook, but I still looked up your question and found this :

Apparently there is no such function in FB chat. (I didnt even know FB HAD a chat lol)

 

lol. i guess if enuf ppl join that page, they'll eventually add one!

and, yeah, chat is pretty hard to miss. as soon as you log in to FB, up comes a popup (lower right, at least in my case) saying how many ppl are "available" to chat.

it is also on the page itself, over on the left, down the bottom. i don't like the redundancy of that, but it's par for the course for a site which has links for "photos" and "see photos" about 4 inches apart....

 

I expect that FB stays in tune with the wishes of their users. I suppose if enough people push for such a feature, then the feature would be implemented at some point. I did my time playing around with Myspace, which is still useful for my musical endeavors, but I just cant seem to find any interest in FB. I did, however watch the movie "The Social Network" which i liked, but really that movie could have been about any sort of business .
At any rate, have fun on FB and push for what you want - the squeaky wheel gets the grease !

poke doesn't involve any sound. it just adds a stupid "You've been Poked!" msg to your homepage.

but i thought maybe there was a trick, or an app, or some backdoor way of piggybacking control characters along with it, such that it WOULD trigger a sound.

and no, i don't see the appeal of FB either. but i do see the appeal of the 5 million 19-yr-old WOMEN who spent all day hanging around on there, so i am trying to get up to speed!

i use trillian and chat through facebook but the one thing i did was remove the ads that show up all over profiles, there's scripts for firefox through greasemonkey that will remove the ads

 

I just use adblock plus with FF and I haven't seen an ad in quite a while. If i do, one right click and its gone-never to be seen again . I've heard that greasemonkey can do some neat tricks, but i haven't checked it out .

 

still haven't worked out how to kludge a buzzer, but in the meantime, can one of u old hands clue me in on some basics of facebook "culture"?

1) is the "wall" considered more sacred than photos? a lot of ppl who reject stranger adds out of hand leave their photos wide open for perusal. yet lock up their walls tighter than fort knox! this is completely the opposite of what i would expect.

in some cases their "info" pages even list cell #s and realworld addys, yet they're afraid of me READING their WALLS?! what the...?!

2) some ppl have 8000+ ppl in their friendlist, yet when i attempt an add, they reply "who d hell are u?"!! like they actually KNOW the first 8000 they've let in?!

3) some ppl very very friendly on walls and/or private msgs, but if i send anything by "chat", it is routinely ignored. is this b/c they are on phones and paying by the word? or is it perhaps that they have phones on by default, but are not actually online/USING facebook at the time?

one person told me chat was too much work, but in my case at least it is waaaaaaaaaay faster and easier than those "messages". FB uses some weird kind of java (i guess) which takes like 7 minutes to register ONE MESSAGE! i have actly told ppl "let's switch over to email instead" -- sending alternate emails back and forth is actly much faster than that weird msg system!!

4) on a scale of 1 to 10, how important is having a photo/realworld-sounding ID/filled-out profile? i put like NO effort into making the ID, yet still get about half of the ppl i approach to accept friend requests.

so imagine my surprise when, a MONTH or TWO later, many of them acted "shocked" that they don't KNOW me!!!! what thu...?! for 2 straight MONTHS i've been making it clear that i'm some random "nobody"...why the reaction NOW?!

only explanation i can think of is that ppl are quick to hit "accept", but don't bother even having a LOOK at who they're accepting until some sort of interaction (chat/msgs) takes place.

5) couple of ppl willingly accepted me, let me post on their walls ad nauseum [again, with some "joe-nobody" type ID], but when i then tried to engage them in MSGS, they got all INDIGNANT abt it, and eventually BLOCKED me! again with the "who the hell are u?!"

is this a case of #3 or #4?

conclusion i reach from most of this is that most ppl will accept u, let u read their walls and see their photos with abandon, but if u so much as DARE to say "hello", there's a good chance they'll cut u loose!!

Lots of people there add anybody because they may be playing some of the games.
Those usually require some huge amounts of friends to really advance. (Mob in Mafia Wars, Clan in Vampire Wars, Neighbors in Farmville)
They accept thinking you are a player that will be joining them.

And yes, I'm on there.

 

Lots of people that use facebook aren't very smart. That basiculy explains locked up walls, but open photos and profile info, some just dont care tho.

 

The baffling thing is the divide between freely accepting you vs. seeming so put upon when you try to msg, or -- god forbid -- CHAT w them!!

It's like letting a stranger into your house, play with your children, and eat your food...then one day he says "BTW, my name is Bob" and you go "OMIGAWD!!!! What the hell are you doing in my HOUSE?!"
