I had a tab open with facebook the other night, and also had gmail open. I wrote en email to a friend and next thing I know I'm being served an ad in facebook sidebar for exactly what was the subject of my email. This has happened a couple of times. I've heard that you should not use a web based browser if you use facebook. Personally I'm thinking about kicking FB to the kerb.

I've nothing to hide but this is a complete invasion of my privacy and it sickens me. Should know from the start that these "free services" have hidden costs... I just wanted to let others know about it. I really don't think it could be coincidence either. I had not searched on google for the suject of conversation, I plugged it directly into en email.

WOW! Scary! I did notice couple years ago that if I used a search engine the very thing I searched for would show up as a ad in Facebook. I started closing my browser and running CCleaner to clear history and cookies after logging off Facebook. I thought Facebook was not showing ads pertaining to my internet activity as much, but I will be watching more carefully now. Thanks for the heads up.

Kestrel13!, you are being tracked by Facebook :crap. All Facebook :fart account holders are being tracked and the info is then sold. That's how Mark Zuckerberg became a multi-billionaire. Look at the follwing thread and see how I was insulted for mentioning this.

I am using Abine's DoNotTrackMe. Unfortunately, it uses a lot of RAM & CPU.

PS Many Americans are up in arms because of the NSA's 'spying' on private citizens, but their silence is deafening about Facebook's 'spying'.

I have recently reinstalled Windows, sikvik, there are lots of things not set up yet to how I'd quite like them to be including a few ads that have no been seen off completely yet...

I've used ghostery in a couple other browsers but never could find it for IE either. But if you swap browsers for just one afternoon or evening you'll get a idea of all the linked together sites there are out there.

I have just checked again and Ghostery is only available for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Opera.

I also use Tracking Protection Lists in IE9, but that's another story. rolleyes

I found tracking protection to be more resource hungry than the trackers. If I go to MG's and google news and maybe youtube who's gonna follow me?

This could be a reason to use an email client for your gmail account; gmail can be set to work as POP or IMAP mail, using an email client to handle your email.
