I got my new computer yesterday and now it won't even boot up. No fans start, nothing. Here are the details:

    P4 2.8gHz
    Asrock ...S61 mobo
    512 mb pc3200 ram
    BENQ 52x cd-rw drive
    floppy drive
    80 gig HD
    pci modem
Radeon 9800 pro 128mb AGP 8x/4x card (slot is 8x)
    400 watt power supply...

Now here is what happened: Set everything up (ie, OS, office suite, drivers) then installed 3 games: 007 Nightfire, Silent Hill 3, and Alice. I did not play alice at all. I started playing Nightfire and ~5 minutes into the game, the computer just flat out quit. It was as if the plug came straight out of the wall. The monitor and speakers were still okay and the tower had it's own plug in the wall. Okay, so I plugged it into a different wall socket and continued, restarted it, installed SH-3 and played it for a little while, then started to play nightfire again. This time, I got about 10 minutes into the game and it did the SAME THING! Only this time, it would not restart. Nothing, just completely dead. I tried 4 different power cables and different outlets to no avail. When I flip the PSU switch on, the 3 lock-lights on the keyboard light up for a moment, as they do when you first start up a computer, and I can hear a very quiet, very high-pitched sound. Then, when I flip the switch off, a few seconds later, the sound stops. My g/f's stepdad tested a bunch of the connections like the front power and reset buttons and HD/CD drive power cables and everything with his voltage tester and everything checked out okay, which leads me to believe that it's a faulty/burnt-out power supply. Now, I know that 400w should be more than enough for what I'm running (the PSU calculator said I should have 305 minimum). Therefore, I think that the PSU was simply defective. It happens. So, today I am going to pick up a new PSU (400watts) and test it out. If it works, then I will send my busted one back and get a replacement and return the one that I buy today. If not, I have to send my whole system back to new york to be inspected. If anyone has any ideas on what I should do (if other than what I said I plan to do) Please let me know. Thanks ya'll

I think your PSU is a good place to start.. let us know what the results are.

Rather than wasting a power supply from your local retailer, you don't know anyone who has a computer that you could borrow a PSU from? All you would need would be a 300W one. It should at least boot up.

Well, I don't know anyone who has a spare PSU...In my house we have my old dell with a wacky proprietary PSU, and Mac's up the wazoo. I called a place thats on the way home from my work and they have one for 22 bucks thats 400w with a one-year warranty. If it doesn't work, I'll return it and send my whole system in. I got a hold of the co. I bought it from, and they just said that before I send it in, see if I can test it out with another PSU, cause when their tech guy/s look at it, thats the first place they'll look. So I'll probably pick that one up, but I may try to bum one from an obsolete computer here at work (I think theres a 300w lying around here somewhere), and try that first. Oh yeah, they also said that if it IS the PSU, just to send it in and they'll send me a replacement (after they decide that it's defective of course). Thanks guys, I'll let you know what happens later today after I attempt to repair it this afternoon.
