HokeyHunter you are on Windows 7. Were you aware of the update issue last week? One of the updates was causing alot of problems. See here:

    http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2013/04/12/patch-tuesday-fatal-system-error/

Here is the Microsoft information on how to remove the update. It's called security update 2823324:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2839011

I would check to see if this update is present on the laptop. If so, follow the instructions on the MS site to remove the update. The fix might require burning a fix to a CD, so this might be something you will need to be able to do...

AtlBo, I don't think I got that update, at least I'm not seeing that number in the list. I'll post a screenshot to see if I'm looking in the right place

    HokieHunter...

Those look like your .NET updates. Here is the Microsoft instructions for seeing which Windows 7 updates you have:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/is-is/windows7/see-which-windows-updates-are-installed

I'm not sure. You might have the right list there, but if you follow the instructions at MS, you can be sure. The date would have been sometime last week, but you might need to scroll down to find the Windows 7 ones. The ones in the picture are all .NET except the Adobe one...

thanks I was looking in the wrong place, but I still did not get that update anyway, my last one was 2813347.

The symptoms posted about that update didn't really match mine either

    OK...

Yes, but the symptoms with that update were sort of all over the place in the real world so to speak.

The next thing I would suggest is to try disabling Norton. Type MSCONFIG and click on the "Start" tab. Disable all the Norton entries. Then try a boot to see if that helps.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try MSCONFIG again and shut down as many programs as are not absolutely necessary. Then reboot again.

If that doesn't work, you may want to try uninstalling Norton. For that I am pretty sure there is a special tool from Norton, but I guess that's a cross the bridge when you get to it thing.

Re: "Failed to connect to a Window Service" ?

OK...I was going from the original post in the thread. Which anti-virus do you use? I looked over the list, but I can't tell which it is, unless it's the McAfee program...

In the initial thread, it says your Norton expired. I don't see it in the start up list...

If you make the first column a little bit wider in the msconfig/start up pane, it would be much easier to see which processes you have. It's a little bit difficult to see in the pictures...

My mom was thinking about my other computer. This one that's affected is protected by the school's package: Symantec Endpoint, which I believe is Norton, but the only thing I see in the startup tab relevant to it is the Mcafee Endpoint

    HokieHunter...

You connect to the internet through a connection provided by your school then? If so, they provide the security software?

In other words, did you when you first got the computer install some software from the school to go online and so that you would have their security?

If I could see your full start up list again with the full names showing...like the three pictures below in post 7, then I think I might be able to help with deciding which ones you can turn off. This would be just to see which process (program) might be causing the slow downs.

Hopefully, you can get a normal boot with as many of these start ups off as possible. Then we can trial and error to find out which one is causing the problem (if it is one of them).

So I will know, do you have a set of restore disks for the PC. Might help later. It would be best if you have the copy of Windows 7 used to originally install your OS...
