2 of the three USB ports have stopped working for no apparrent reason. I've tried using device manager to put this right but I don't really know what I am doing!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    From this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/dell-xps-l502x-usb-3-ports-not-working.734814/
that laptop has two USB 3 ports and 1 USB 2 port.
If the USB ports that failed are on the same side and USB 3 ports, perhaps the daughter board can be replaced.

Truthfully, I only open a laptop to install RAM. I don't trust myself to start disassembling things. If I had only one working USB port, I would buy a powered USB hub and use that.
    example: https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-7-Port-Speed-Power-Adapter/dp/B003Z4G3I6

Don't waste money buying a USB 3 hub because if the working port is only USB 2, you won't get USB 3's speed advantage.
It is also not worth spending a lot of money on a 7 year old laptop running an unpatched and insecure version of Windows.

Can't believe someone else has the same problem I have. All 3 of my USB ports have stopped working. I have an HP 15-f212wm. It's old, I know, but I can't afford a new one now. I tried my flash drives in my work laptop (which doesn't have a CD burner, which I need) and they all work fine, so I know it's the ports. I tried all the troubleshooters I could find online, and none work. What can you recommend, please? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your help. After watching the repair video I to am not going to attempt to change the daughter board! I will use a Hub. I think my problem is a driver problem. I did see something in device drivers about a faulty unknown device but I have done something stupid and deleted the unknown device driver!

Kudos to Plodr. This fixed my machine in 5 mins. All USB ports working again. Brilliant. Many thanks.

Ah, I love it when something works! :D

Do yourself a big favor - save that driver somewhere safe (USB stick?) and attach a note card to it. If the two USB 3 ports quit, run this driver.

Is there any help for someone who's lost ALL 3 UBB ports? Short of buying a new laptop?

What have you tried? Do the ports receive power? (You'd test this by plugging in a cellphone and see if it charges. It doesn't matter if the phone is recognized, just that it shows it is being charged.)

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, I plugged my cell phone into 2 of those ports, and it charged up fine, but my flash drives are not recognized in either of them. I know the flash drives are OK, because they're recognized by my work laptop. (My third port has been shot for years, but I don't mind that--I would really like to use the others, though). Thanks again!

Since the ports are supplying power, then we can assume that they do work.
I'd advise you to order a powered USB hub and use that. We don't want the other ports to die. Let's assume the port that doesn't work is the USB 3 port and stick to buying a USB 2 powered hub.
    example https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-7-Port-Speed-Power-Adapter/dp/B003Z4G3I6

Once that arrives, we'll work on getting your flash drives recognized.

thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, and it still didn't work--the hub lit up, and the flash drives lit up when I plugged them into the hub, but my laptop still didn't recognize them. And I know the flash drives are OK, because they work on my work laptop and my desktop PC. Any other ideas, please?

Go into the BIOS and be sure that USB is enabled.
What does Device Manager show? Any red X's or yellow !'s?

BIOS didn't show anything about USB. Under Device Manager, all 3 USB ports say "This device is working properly". I also plugged my wireless mouse into all 3 ports, and it didn't work in any of them.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. The ports supply power shown by the USB hub. The USB devices light up when plugged into the hub.
I'm not sure why no devices are recognized. It seems like something is blocking them but I don't have a clue what is disabling all USB drivers.

At this point, you'd need to wait and take it to a shop when you can get out and the shops are open and have someone diagnose the problem.

You never posted what OS you are running. I'm seeing posts on this model
15-f272wm where the USB ports no longer work because of upgrading from Windows 7 to 10. I could not find a model that you posted 15-f212wm.

I'm on an HP laptop, HP 15-f272wm. I'm running Windows 10. It's about 4 years old. I don't know if any of that helps, but I appreciate the advice so far.

Hi! I have a similar issue: I have a WinXP laptop at my mother's house with two USB ports, but only one of them works. I think it was a short. I want to plug a CD-RW drive, a flash drive and a Zoomfloppy in it. The Zoomfloppy seems to be a power-hungry device. Where can I get a powered USB hub? And for how much? I live in the U.S.

Amazon. Make sure it mentions that it works on XP.
