WinXP Home running OfficeXP Pro... updates for Windows install w/o any problems. Updates for Office download OK but do not install. Attached below is a screen shot from the Event Viewer. This same error appears eight times, once for each update that is failing. Office works fine, so these updates aren't mandatory, but they are primarily security updates, and my client is bothered by these updates not installing. I have installed the newest version of Microsoft Installer, I have used the "repair Installer" and "repair Updates" in Dial-A-Fix, and so far nothing has worked. The 2nd screen shot is an error from after installing the new MSinstaller... Any info is appreciated.

    THX!

Is the "Office Source Engine" service enabled (automatic)?

These are updates for Word Viewer 2003. Do you have KB numbers for the 8 updates? The articles I'm finding on Word Viewer 2003 are from 2009 and earlier.

Thanks for the responses.... but something else has gone horribly wrong... I left work last night, powered off the PC via normal methods (Start > Turn Off Computer > Turn Off), and this morning I powered it on, and just boots to the desktop wallpaper: no icons, no Start button, no system tray/clock/taskbar/quick launch. :confused If I CTRL+ALT+DEL and run "explorer" or "explorer.exe" it appears in the processes list for about 2 seconds and then disappears. All I did yesterday was install the new MSinstaller (v4.5 I think), and I ran Dial-A-Fix. I don't remember if I rebooted after either of those actions.... weird. I'll try a "Last Known Good Config" boot, and then I'll try to launch System Restore via the "File > Run (new task)" in the Task Mgr if needed.....

    ..... freekin' PCs....

I got the normal desktop back via a System Restore (C:\Windows\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe). The Office Source Engine was indeed disabled in Services. Enabling it and setting it to automatic and making sure it was running at the time of updating has NOT fixed the problems. The updates still fail to install. Attached below is a screen shot of the error names with KB numbers....

:confused I just realized that the failed updates say "Office2003", but the PC has Office XP Pro installed.... is the cause of everything? is there a "dirty" or corrupt file someplace that's causing a problem?

Could very well be. It would not be the first time MS iffered updates for something that a computer did not have.
Did the person ever have Office 2003 installed?

I'm not sure, and I forgot to ask when he called about an hour ago - he NEEDS the PC back, so he said "wipe it and reload Windows, I'll do the Office install at home". So that's the end of this story...

However, for future reference, if anyone has any insight in to this issue, please post. I'm thinking that Office2003 was originally installed, and was either uninstalled incorrectly/partially, and Office XP was loaded after it; or someone tried to repair the OfficeXP using a 2003 install disc? Who knows? It was a weird scene....

I just went to my source for the latest info on this month's patches, Susan Bradley. She said to hold off on Office 2003 patches. I didn't write down the KB number, sorry. I was busy comparing what I was offered; three XP computers and I was offered 8 patches on one, 9 patches on another and 10 on the third. Then writing down which I needed to skip.

After speaking with my client this afternoon, he asked "what is Office XP anyway?" - my jaw hit the floor. He didn't even know what Office was, yet he brought me the PC for repair because "Office updates won't install". yeah - VERY strange. So, I explained to him what Office is: "it's Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and some versions have FrontPage and/or Access; Outlook is for dealing with email, Word is for typing letters and general word processing, Excel is for spreadsheets and data processing, PowerPoint is for graphic presentations with text, pics, and audio, etc". He replies with "Ohhhhh - I never use any of that stuff anyway".

    :confused

    I was left speechless.....
