failure start up

When I power on my unit, it comes on but refuses to boot. Then there is this beeps. One short one and one long one. I took out the RAM but the beep still continues. What could this problem have been?

 

Welcome, what make/model do you have? IBM codes point to a bad motherboard, the only match I could find.

Remove and reseat the memory (ram), as those beeps are typical-

If you have a spare stick of ram, try changing it-
If you have two , try one at a time - then a different one.
If it is found to be the first 64mb of memory, it could then be the motherboard.

 

I have actually removed and replaced the memory and vga cards and the beep still persists. I havent inserted a diff memory stick tho, maybe that may correct it, just maybe I'm not sure

 

Augiedoggie's link shows different codes for some, but the HP site is that little bit more specific, although you never gave the exact model of Compaq Presario = - But I would also look at the Hp flashing light codes there, to check against yours.
The video beep codes appear different from your 1 short, and 1 long beep.

Do you have an idea what motherboard can be compatible with a compaq presario s2000 dual core?

There are often other laptops that use "generic" boards, but I cannot offer any information on them, as the ports around a laptop can be so different- I would try a new ram stick first, it it was mine.
Obviously Ebay is a source for secondhand, but you could be buying the same problem - new one's are often over £100, and more.
If you check the led codes, and go to that HP link, you may still be able to ask customer service for help with the led flash codes that you find.
