Hi There, I have run into a virus that has shut down my PC and I only get a black screen during boot up. Doesn't even make it to the Windows XP splash page.

I have XP-Sp2 and should have the security patches applied. I can boot an old UBCD4Win disk and was able to make a current backup of my files to a non-boot HD. However, I can't figure out how to run Malwarebytes, or any other stuff, since I can't boot the machine from my c: disk. Microsoft's site suggest I may have a MBR problem, but I can't clean the virus to be safe in running FixMBR...

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Choots

THanks Tim, I'm taking your last option - reinstall. I've been able to back up my essential data on another drive in the machine, and when I've gotten it back up and running my plan is to run Malwarebytes to look for infections on it before copying anything over to the new windows installation.

Any issues with this or any suggestions for me? Thanks for all your help; it's great to have a resource like Major Geeks and the Malware removal forum specifically.

    Thanks,
    Peter

Your plan is the right direction to take. After the reformat and clean install, install all your protection software and then use it to scan your backups before you reinstall them. ;)

Thanks - base OS install is done along with all drivers and av/malware tools and I've scanned all flash drives and hard drives on the system with no reports of any issues.

I'm going to use Drive Image XML to make a boot image of this install so I don't have to go through this again.

Thanks for responding to my request for help!
