    Hello, Gabgam

*We recommend a MINIMUM of 1 GB for Windows XP and a MINIMUM of 2 GB for Vista or Windows 7 but the more memory you can add the better.
    Step 1:
Please disable Spybot's TeaTimer as instructed in the R & R ME FIRST guide.
    How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    Step 2:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features if using Vista or Windows 7) for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Step 3:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 4:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 5:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 6:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 7:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    dr.m

    Hi Dr Moriarty,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have been able to boot in normal mode but had to create a new user on the system to run the scans because I was unable to save anything to desktop and all shortcuts have disappeared, even in the start menu. Also, Ctrl+Alt+Del was not working for this user.

I completed all the methods described in your last post and ran Combofix which detected a rootkit in volsnap.sys. Combofix rebooted the machine and then unfortunately, Avira kicked in and detected
    "TR /Patched.gendetected in file 'C:\Qoobox\32788R22FWJFW\volsnap.sys."

The notepad file CFscript.txt was also renamed to catchme.txt

The requested MG log is attached.

    "Hi" back at you, Gabgam.

*To free up some system memory resources, you may want to use this to de-select some un-needed applications and processes from loading at startup. But you still need to upgrade your installed RAM.
    Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone

Using Windows Explorer, delete these files :
Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
*If you wish - you can run this online scan and attach the resulting ESETscan.txt log --> Using ESET's Online Scanner

    - otherwise, you can move on to our final cleanup steps:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:

    Thanks,

I am unable to delete the application data files as they do not show in explorer but I know they are there! I have show hidden files enabled but still cannot see the Application Data Folder.

I have run EST Scanner and it detected two infections but there was no option to export the log file.

Also, how can I renable the Ctr+Alt+Del function and how can I save things to my desktop again? The desktop is completey clear of all my icons and when I click on the desktop the start menu pops up.

I will get some extra ram soon too.

EDIT I have now deleted the application data files.

    You're welcome.
Please go to the following link and scroll down to line 51 (right column) and click on "Enable the Task Manager" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double-click it and answer "Yes" to the import prompt.

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

*Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. (Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one, if you have not yet performed my "final cleanup" steps.)

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

Now run the C:\MGtools\FixAttr.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Did that fix your other issues?

    Thanks again Dr

I found that alot of the links on Kellys Corner were not working for me. I managed to google it and found that changing a single registry value from 1 to 0 fixed it.

II also ran the Mgtools but thta hasn't fixed my desktop issue unfortunately, might it it be easier if I just deleted that account and used a new one?

Did you run the C:\MGtools\FixAttr.bat command as requested or did you just run MGtools.exe ?

Just a little something to try.

Re-run Malware Bytes and SUPERantispyware (after updating each) and let us know if they find anything. (Do you still have them installed? It's reccomended to keep them)

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now do you have access to Task Manager and Regedit?

Okay then attach the C:\MGtools\FixAttr.txt log that was created.

Is the Newuse user account the one that you have problems with? That is the one you are attached the last logs for. If this is not the account with problems, you are running scans on the wrong account.

The newuse account is the account that I had to create as I was unable to save combofix to desktop and run the scans from within the original account which is Gabriela Gama. Gabriela Gama is the account with all the problems.

I have attached the fixattrib log which I did run from within the Gabriela Gama account.

Sorry for any problems that I have made by creating this new account :-o

Oh, and when I log into Gabriela Gama notepad opens a file called Desktop with the following
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

Thanks I will rerun those scans, but I can´t save anything to desktop remember!

Save to the MGtools folder then and run from there. ;) That is assuming you still have it. If not, redownload MGtools.exe and run it again to recreate.

One more thing I want you to do while you are booted in the user account having the problem.

Please download and save the below to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it. Did that help?

I reran Mbam and SAS and MBAM detected two items, so I have attached the log.

I figured out that I could infact save to desktop but the saved items were simply not showing on the desktop. So, I ran the registry fix and removed the two items found by Mbam and rebooted. Now the desktop issue seems to be fixed, just not sure if I still have malware on the pc.

Any malware you had was removed earlier. Unless you reinfected the PC afterwards, you should be clean.

Make sure you have completed the final instructions that dr.moriarty gave you in message # 6.

Tell me, or show me with a screenshot the contents of these folders.

    • c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\134E
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\3082

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Delete this folder.

    c:\progra~1\IMESHA~1

If you have not already followed final steps please do this:

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
