Sorry if these questions are basic but I let my son talk me into building a PC and we have gotten in over our heads.

    Processor: pentium d
    Motherboard: Intel d955xbk
    Fan: Cooler Master Hyper 48

My problem is a very hot cpu. Idle temp is around 55 C. the most basic function (reading cd) and temp drives up past 75 c and climbing. Have reinstalled fan several times

My question is about the fans RPMs. It is 1420 or so and stays there. Shoudln't the RPMs increase as the temp rises?

Also, after installing fan I realize that Cooler master says this fan is for a socket 775/Pentuim 4. I have a socket 775/Pentium D. Does that matter?

    Thanks

splitt3r You are now the victim of a drive by title change

I don't think the type of cpu matters, just the socket type. did you forget to put thermal grease on the heatsing(cpu side)? that could be your problem, if so try arctic silver 5 on newegg, i hear it is good stuff.

I just got rid of my Hyper48 and went to water,BUT the Hyper48 is a very good heat sink, and the RPM's@1500 are ok because the hyper 48 has heatpipes to transfer heat(as im sure u know),like the other guy said, check the thermal grease(dont put a lot, just a little in the center) and ummm make sure you connect the 3 pin connector the proper way..It has to options on it i believe it is for AMD and P4 so make sure you have that pluged in properly(refer to yout manual) if you still have heat issues, your problems may be bigger than u think..try the steps again and let us know how it goes..

Yep it dropped my CPU temp by 5C straight away! Excellent instructions on application on their site:

    Well worth AU$8.

On the Hyper48, you need to have a 4 pin fan conector for speed switching, which I've yet to see, even on my Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe. Otherwise, it runs at the minimum speed, which you are seeing.

The fan conector on my motherboard is a 4-pin conector... or am I missing something?

    thanks

I almost bet its 3 pin.

    Let me look it up.

I looked it up, and it appears the board does indeed have some 4 pin headers.

Now whether the CPU header is 4 pin, I can only go by your word. If thats the case, then the only other thing I can think of is your motherboard isn't controlling fan speed. I wonder if there is a fan control setting in the BIOS, akin to Qfan used by Asus?
