Fan speeds low

I recently had to go into the BIOS and noticed that two of the fans are running at 400RPM and are denoted in red.

I called ASUS, but the rep was clueless.

The computer seems to be fine and this may be something I have never noticed before.

Is it something to be concerned about?

The CPU Fan is 1232 RPM.
The CHA Fan 1 is 398 RPM.
The CHA Fan 2 is 428 RPM.
    CPU temp is 89.6 F.
    MB temp is 87.8 RPM.

Do I change the settings in the MB, and if so how? Asus p8z77-v

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Hi Paul

Your temps are very low. They are probably thermastatically controlled. If your CPU temp goes up the fans will probably speed up.

    Hi Rich,

Does that mean I am OK?

Asus told me to download a different BIOS which would give me the choice of increasing fan speed, but I am leery of fooling with BIOS if I can help it.

yeah. i dont see ,uch wrong with it. if you want to test you could try useing coretemp to monitor cpu temperature from windows. you could then use prime95 to stress you pc. you should see temps go up and as they do you should hear your fans speed up.

    Hi Rich, One final question:

Normally the Coretemp app is showing the four core speeds at 31 - 33.

I was doing a dvd conversion and the temps went up to 70.
    Is that considered acceptable?

    What would be considered dangerous?
BTW - I was able to hear the fan going ( in front.)

It's acceptable but still slightly hot, the longer and hotter you run cpu's the less time they last and the more they heat up surrounding motherboard components.

I would just do basic cooling tweaking, clean up all the wires in your case, try to hide them or at least push them to the side away from the central air flow, make sure you have plenty of air flowing through the case with a least one 120mm intake at the bottom of the case and one 120mm exhaust fan at the rear of the case, make sure everything is clean of hair and dust.

Your load temperatures are pretty normal though, your fan must be speeding up and your cpu must have good contact with the heatsink or it would be a lot hotter than 75C. Alot depends on your ambient temperature also so if the room is hot you'll struggle to get the temp any lower without spending money in which case don't worry about it.

Everyone has their own opinion of the maximum working temperature, mine is 70C under full load using a linx stress test. Intel and AMD state they're fine up to 100C under full load but can become permanently damaged at 115C so the cpu will auto throttle back at 100C.

    Thanks for reply, Rikky

I was a little concerned because a few days ago I had a BSOD.

Upon reboot, I heard a "pop" and saw a flash from the front of the case.

I immediately shut down and later that day rebooted to see if the comp would even boot.

It did, and everything appears to be normal.

I also ran a BITS test from Intel and it showed all passing marks.
The other test (below) says "fail" and I have no idea what it means.

Are you familiar with this test?

    Thanks,

    Paul

I'm not familiar with the test but just reading it, it appears to be testing the sata hub for it's device information, this could be failed for a number of reasons and if your sata controller and hard drive is working I wouldn't worry about it, check device manager for and yellow exclamation marks or red crosses and make sure you update your motherboard drivers, post your operating system.

    Could this relate to you?

To test your cpu use this program, set the stress level to maximum and let it run to completion, if your cpu is unstable it will fail this test. If it passes you can be sure it's completely stable as there is no program that will come anywhere near this level of stress, even if a computer fails intel burn but passes prime 95 many consider that a stable computer because it's such a stressful program.

Your cpu can run 10C hotter than running prime 95 so keep an eye on temperatures.

If you want to investigate the BSOD read the thread in the frequently asked questions forum to set your computer up to write a dump file, if it happens again either investigate it yourself or add as an attachment with a thread in the hardware forum and one of us will debug it for you.

As for the pop check your motherboard for damage and scorch marks, make sure everything is connected tightly, it could be anything even something harmless depending where it came from so I can't really help with that.

    Hi Rikky,

I ran the Intel test and it said passed.
Should I also run the Prime 95 test?

The recall, I don't think applies to me - bought it only 4 months ago.

There's nothing wrong with your cpu and it's running at a full 75gflops, did you make a note of the maximum temperature during the test?

I think it show in the first pic - 73

    Sorry - that's flops.

The temp on my comp at time (Core temp) was 81.

A little hot but not abnormally so, do some basic cooling maintenance and see if you can get it down a little but otherwise it's fine:)

Apologies for disappearing but I havent been on for a while. Sounds like you are all sorted though.

One note, Prime95 wont test your PC but it puts it under constent load so that you can see how your PC performs under stress. ie you set core temp running then run prime95 and see how your temps run.

    Hi Rikky,

My comp just rebooted while I was on it and I had previously set it to record dump file.

I ran Who Crashed and this is the only one recorded.
I don't know if this was the intentional crash or if it tells you anything.

    Thanks,

    Paul
