i have a fan near all my motherboard sockets and is only powered by the power supply and i'm not sure it does anything other than just make such a loud noise! if i kick the computer it stops for 2 secs then continues! do i need this fan - it came with my computer when i bought it so i don't want to do anything i shouldn't!

You need to get a new fan. Sounds like the baring is going.

You do need it, its a case fan and you need it to cool all of the components in the computer.

Hey, try this program to see if the amount of speed is the problem.

You can manage the speeds of your fans.
Give me some feed back when you return(if you decide to try rhis program).

    Probably about a tenner.

That program won't work, because its not connected to the motherboard, just the power supply.

Goldfish, are you talking about SpeedFan?
Because if you are, i know for a fact it's connected to the CPU, Chasis, and PSU.

Err, there is NO WAY to tell the RPM of a fan which a) has no speed sensor cable b) isnt connected to the motherboard.

Yes, you can VAUGLEY guess the speed depending on voltage fluctuations but its not nearly accurate to give a reading within 1000RPM's
