Fan

The motherboard fan in my tower is making a grinding noise, it is less then a year old, i know it's this particular fan cause i disconnected it then started the machine up and there was no grinding at all. I want the noise to stop...any suggestions.

 

If the fan is the PSU fan replace the PSU, if the fan is for MB air flow replace the fan both the PSU and the Fan are alot cheaper than the other components so don't flinch just replace, Oh and Welcome to Major Geeks Chala

 

Thanks for the welcome BCGray someone told me that most cooling fans have bearings which will make noise when they get too dirty what do you think?

 

Yes dude, its the bearings.....You could try a light sewing machine oil, spread sparingly, but i would take BC's advice and replace the fan!

they are relatively cheap, compared to your CPU and mobo!

Basically most Fans are a non repairable item, yea you can get out your trusty can of WD40 and give the bearings a squirt, but the problem will come back later. Most Fan bearings are made of sintered metal that contains a lubricant, these glaze over quickly and squeal. The ones with actual Ball Bearings also dry up and squeal. Any noise coming from a fan means replacement or you will lose more costly components when they over heat.

The bearings are affectively "Sealed" and no dirt should get in the actual bearing area, even though the fan itself may be dirty. Hope that Helps
