Some power supplies have a fan on top and on the back. My tower case only has an opening for the back. Does there need to be an opening on top of the tower case? Also, do all power supplies fit any type of case (I have one of the newer gateway GT computers)?

you may be trying to install it upside down- it probably has an intake fan on the bottom, and an exhaust fan on the back.

Their are different standards for cases/power supplies. I'm guessing you have an atx case, so order an atx power supply. If you aren't sure, measure your old one and look up the dimmensions for the new one.

Yes, as gimpster123 said, what you're referring to as the top is actually the bottom when the unit is mounted in the computer case. So, no, you don't need, or want, an opening on top of the tower case.
