Far too many processes

I'm currently running a ThinkPad Z60M laptop with Windows XP SP2, and I have way too many processes running. A CAD right now shows 77 processes running, while my main computer shows only 34. Would it be alright to post up a HijackThis log including my processes list so it can be analyzed by someone who knows what they're doing a bit better than I?

On a brand new XP operating system with no optional software installed, there are approximately 18 processes. Every PC will be different depending upon what hardware it contains.

Once you start adding software such as antivirus and other drivers, the numbers start going up. The real answer is, there is no real answer.

each system is different......post your log and we shall see!

any process you dont use should be eliminated..

To expand upon what nitecrawler has said, processes are typically started in 1 of two ways:

    1. As a startup program (When a user logs in)
    2. As a system service (When Windows loads)

Most start only one process, others can start multiple processes! Fortunately, these can be easily managed!

Startup programs can be managed with CCleaner. There is a list of all startup programs in the 'Startup' section of the 'Tools' tab. Alot of these can be changed to load only when needed. DO NOT remove antivirus, antispyware or firewall entries! They should be running at all times!

As for system services, Major Attitude has written a FAQ called, Disable Unneeded Services In Windows XP that describes how to use Window's management console to disable unneeded services.

I've tried cleaning it up, but I can't quite figure out exactly what I'm using or not [I could close, for example, the ThinkPad "UltraNav" utility, but then would I be unable to use the cursor?].

I would figure it out myself, but apparently the ultra-super-code-monkeys over at IBM/Lenovo decided to make everything as complicated as possible and, instead of consolidating it all, made sure that everything was as hard to clean as possible [three TpKmapMn's? Is it necessary to have three processes running (one from User, two from SYSTEM) for a program I uninstalled long ago? And TPHDEXLG! How could anyone figure out it's related to the Active Protection System without googling?]

Here's the log. I'll check back when I wake up.

Laptops traditionally have more processes running than desktops. :p
Right now I have 69 running (make that loaded, not necessarily running) on my Toshiba laptop.

When I log off and run Smartclose, the number drops to 25, or so.

Process Explorer is a great program to list loaded processes in various sequences.
You can even load Comments, against each process, to remind you why they are there.

Sort to Company name and you will soon see the main perpetrators.
I've got 10 from Toshiba, 8 from Symantec, 15 from Microsoft, 5 from Avast, etc.

I notice you have a few from McAfee, for instance.

You can sort to descending amount of RAM used, as another check.
AOL, Trillian and Zone Alarm are my 3 greatest users of RAM, while I am on the net.

    Process Explorer.http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4566

There is no "proper" number of processes that you should have running.
Each PC is unique in the number of programs that YOU decide you want running.
Lots of others are added by the laptop maker, and Microsoft, and others over which you have little control. But that shouldn't stop you from trying to unload them. Bazza

For an explanation of each process and whether or not it needs to be running, check this site out:

Click on the "Task List" button, processes are listed alphabetically.
