    HI all,

    Short version:
Can I use one computer to access the faxmodem on another computer on my LAN?

    Long Version:
My main computer (XP SP2) has run out of PCI slots so I have had to abandon my modem card in favour of another card.
My back up computer (win98SE) is connected via peer-to-peer crossover to the main computer. I only use this computer to store backups from the main computer. BUT it could house the modem. Can I use the FAX software from main computer to send faxes through the backup computer's modem? If so How?

You might find it easier to install the FAX software on the Win98 system, then access it via the network to send faxes.

So do you mean, from my XP machine I navigate to the program on the the 98SE machine via the network?... and this will work?

Normally the fax would work as a printer selection from the originating software like msword>print doc>select printer>fax>"print" initaites fax software>input fax number (and other details)>send the fax... somehwere in this process I have to direct the print information to the other machine... do I install it like a network printer?

I guess receiveing wouldn' t be so hard. But then can I print out on my XP machine's printer?

OK I navigated to the FAX application on the 98 computer from the XP machine and fired it up. It loaded into the XP machine but couldn't find the modem.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    Don't see why not.

Not sure I fully understand you. What FAX software are you using? Is your XP printer setup as a network (shared) printer? If your Win98 and WinXP machines are fully networked together, then you should be able to access the application on the Win98 machine from the XP machine, and have the results print to whatever networked printer you want.

    Yes, that should be possible.

Is the modem installed and working on the Win98 system? If you attempt to send a fax while sitting at the Win98 machine, does it work?

Yes the 98/modem system works. The fax software I am using is "phonetools" which came bundled with the 98 system all those years ago but still works fine.
