feedback noise on playback- mic

Hi,
I just plugged our 1997 mic, which still works as far as anybody knows, into our 2004 or whatever computer becuase I want to make some 'night audio program' recordings. When I record (using windows sound recorder in Accessories>entertainment) I can see my voice registering on the recorder, but when i play it back it just sounds like feedback. I already googled setting up & as far as I can tell everything is set up correctly. Any thoughts? Or do I just need a new mic ?(we made a couple of calls on it a long time ago so I know it worked. It's barely been touched since).
I really had my heart set on this project.
Windows XP. Both computers are Gateway.

Obviously if you have another mic to try that would be the best course of action or try the mic in another computer,this will definitively tell if the mic is working.

Double check list,mic is the pink connector and goes into pink connector not blue line in,check device manager for red crosses and exclamation marks regarding audio,turn mic input down in volume control options,update sound card driver from gateways website,make sure your audio device is listed and selected in control panel,sound,recording.

Update your audio codecs,try playing the WAV file in a different player VLC,media player classic.
