    Hi!

I use Firefox, but on occasion use Internet Explorer. I know how to import and export Bookmarks, but is there such a thing as a program that will automatically save a bookmark into both browsers when added? Make sense?
    :p

    Thanks!

hmm.. interesting. Not that I know of, but it sounds like a fun project. I think I'll make something that does just this ;)

just wanted to let you know that I'm working on the program now. I am about 30% finished with the first beta. Just wiring up events now. Next thing to do is to figure out how exactly to pull the data and sync it. I have few ideas but I'm trying to keep it simple.

Will be looking for beta testers.. any takers?

sure I'll beta test, just so long as you are at least 80% sure, it won't nuke something :D

as long as you backup your favorites files, there shouldn't be a problem.

Cool.. I will post links to beta's in this thread.
This is going to be a freeware app.

Count me in of course! lol

(As long as a slightly computer illiterate person such as myself can test it,... or maybe I'll just leave it to you guys! lol)
    ;)

Thank you so much for taking on this project! It's very appriciated and I'm sure it'll be a success! You could make $millions$ !!!!

about 50% done with the wireup of events. The next part is the hardest part; Getting the url's to cross over. This may take me a few days to figure out and test it before I send out there for you guys/gals to tinker with.

    Here's a screen shot teaser ;)

Suggestion - have your program scan for the location of the program's executable file. User would still need to confirm this, though.

It runs off an option file that is xml. The bullets there will let you decide the direction you want to go. There will be a context menu for the tray icon that will let you switch manually as well. I will also run a detection on the processes to look for IE or FF and pop a box prompting to switch.

I just noticed, Firefox is misspelled for the radio button for "FirFox to IE". Just a cleanup thing which can be done once the functionality is working. Wish I could beta test, but here at work can't install FireFox (or anything else) on my computer (restricted user account).

Thanks for the spot ;) fixed that. Bummer about not being able to help test. :(

I'm so exicted about your program coming to life! I appreciate the hard work and brain strain trying to make this come true for me and many other FF and IE users!

Once the program is complete, and out of testing, would it be available only to members, or do you think it may be available to pass along to others outside the forum?

    Thanks so much Kodo!

Getting closer to getting the Firefox part working. Since I'm getting close to testing, I want to make sure you all understand what is needed for this to work.

    Requirements:
    Windows 2000/XP/2003
    .NET 1.1 Framework
NTFS File System - this will not work with FAT32

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

Definately will be helpful to have. I know that I'm going to use it.
Figured out one of the harder parts last night. Then I ran into another bugger that is forcing me to re-write a part of that solution. lol. It always happens that way. I MIGHT have a preview build that will be able to sync from Firefox to IE some time today.

OK, I have the first build up. It only goes from FF to IE right now. Lets gets some feedback and I'll continue on with the process.

    Get the zip file here
    Requirements:
    Windows 2K/XP/2003
    .NET Framework 1.1
NTFS file system (will not work on FAT/FAT32)

There is NO installation set up at this point. Just unzip to a folder on your hard drive and run the F2e-Sync.exe file. Fill in the path to both browsers favorites directories and hit apply. You hide the app to the sys tray by FILE->HIDE. To start the sync process, click Start Sync via the button or the systray icon's context menu.

I encourage you to make backups of your favorites during the testing process. the FF to IE function doesn't modiy any documents or folders, it only adds a link to the favorites folder.

I didn't have time to put alot of "I plan on doing this" in the readme mainly because I'm exhausted.

ALL feedback, good or bad, is welcomed; but remember, this is BETA software.

let me tell you, it was a REAL PITA to get firefox to sync. First I had to figure out the weird things it does with the book mark file (1day down), then I had to tackle a regular expression to pull out the urls and the names from the file and figure out how to go about comparing the changes. I had to use 2 ways to make this happen: an MD5 hash of the file to see if the data actually changed after the filesystem watcher triggered AND a file size comparison (larger=addition). Hard to explain why I used the MD5 hash as well , save to say that depending what happens with the file, the content can be the same but data in the file may have been altered (white spaces etc). Then to get all that to sing and dance took all of today but most of 9pm to 1:30am tonight. Not fun.. but it was fun in a morbid sort of way..lol

Have you tried the following Firefox extension?
    http://syncmarks.mozdev.org/
It will synchronise your FF and IE bookmarks. There are various options too, such as setting it to automatically synchronise bookmarks to IE each time you close FF.

Mind you, Kodo's new add-on looks interesting too! (not intending to outdo it in any way at all, it might end up being better than SynMarks ;)

  29. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

well I'll be.. didn't know one existed. ;)

I hadn't seen this thread till now, so I'm sorry if I came in late on it... Keep working on your own add-on though, never hurts to have a choice! :D

  31. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

Working on it as we speak. I read the FAQ for syncmark and I'm not quite sure if it syncs FROM IE to FF. In any case, my app will do this on the fly and allow you change the direction on the fly too ;)

I will eventually add more process checking for automated on the fly switching.

Right now I'm just tidying up some events. I will hopefully have the IE to FF feature done by tonight.

I've been watching this thread, you are gonna have a download on the exstension page, very impressive

  33. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

Nope.. this is NOT a firefox extension. It is a solo exe that will sit in your sys-tray and monitor the activity.

  34. Oooops!

    Oooops! MajorGeek

Hey Kodo, perhaps as a newbie I shouldn't try your program yet, but I did, lol.

I may have done something wrong, but when it asked for "favourites path", I chose "cancel" for the "default setting". However, I get a popup saying that the program couldn't find my Firefox Bookmark file when I try to sync.

I'm not sure what I'm saying, perhaps I'm using the program incorrectly. Are you by chance working on one for dummies too? lol
    :p

  35. Oooops!

    Oooops! MajorGeek

Thanks for the link! Looks like they're working on it, so I wasn't able to check it out. Damn, I can't even use Kodo's, I'm so computer challenged! lmao

  36. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

Yeah, this part is slightly confusing because the profiles path that is used is different for each profile for firefox.. example:

    C:\Documents and Settings\kodosan\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.bjc

that is the path to my favorites folder for Firefox. Blue is what I can default to in the program.. the red is what is never the same, so it's up to you to drill down into it when you browse. Your bookmarks.html file will always be in profilename.XXX where xxx is some random characters. I have a few ideas on this now that I'm typing it out and I'll try to put that into another build of the program. I Have a new one coming up soon (tonight hopefully) that will sync both directions.

Very cool idea... Much cooler, IMHO, if you could get away from that damn .net crap, I rarely need it on my machine, it just never took off for the average desktop user.... I know, impossible, but I like to bitch. Call me tommorow.

P.S Want it to get more downloads? See if it is compatible with the new Netscape 8.0 based on Firefox because its pretty cool as well.

.NET is the future of programming for windows. It's not crap; it's very powerful and flexible;)

I will download NS8 and test it out. Will buzz you after 9am tomorrow ;)

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

It works fine with netscape 8. Just substitute the firefox profile path with the netscape one and voila' :)

I'll work on the IE to FF version first and add full compatibilty (checking mostly) for netscape in a later release.

The future? Wasnt it released about 2 years ago? I think we have about 10 out of 4,000 programs here that use it. Dont see that happening. Pretty typical for people to avoid another bloated Microsoft idea.

    New Build

I disagree. MS is pushing .NET hard and fast. Their v2.0 is even more superior than .NET 1.1 in comparison to 1.1 vs VB6 (win32). You can do so much more with .NET and so much faster too. It's just that there are more programs out there that were built in before .NET became popular. It's widely used in business apps. Heck even ATI's control panel is .NET.

anywho..here's a new build that works with Netscape 8 as well.

    Thanks for the automatic installation!
    :D

    Question fer ya, I was wondering if it's just a typo;
In the program, where it says,

    1. "Path to Firefox Bookmark Folder",
    2. Then you click "Browse",
    3. A window opens saying; "Please select your Internet Explorer Favourites path" (shouldn't it say, "Firefox" not IE"? as the browse feature was to find the Firefox folder?)

    Thanks, just wonderin'!
    ;)

Yes, typo.. I will fix it tomorow. Thanks for catching that ;)
Is it working for you now?

  48. Oooops!

    Oooops! MajorGeek

Yes, thank you, it's working great! I think I've figured it out. Can I leave
the program running all the time? Will it automatically add bookmarks to Internet Explorer everytime I add one to Firefox, or do I need to open your program each time I want to add a bookmark?

    Thank you!
    :D

  49. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

It must remain running for the syncing process to work. If you go to FILE-->HIDE, it will hide the program to the system tray near the clock. As soon as you add a bookmark to Firefox, it will automatically add it to your IE favorites directory.

Load up the program, set the parameters and hit Start Sync, hide it and let it ride..

    Thank you!

    One last question;
When I shut the computer down for the day, do I close your program, then re-open it the next day I use the computer? Or do I not touch at all?

    Thanks!
    :D

    P.S
    Edited to add;
Thanks for your patience with me!
    ;)
