Figure this out

Try to solve this without Google. I figure many of you may already know it because of it's possible background.


You enter a room. In the room is a door to another room that is closed but not locked. On the wall beside the door are three light switches. One of the light switches turns on the single incandescent light bulb hanging from the ceiling of the second room. You have to figure out which switch.
The restrictions.
The door is sealed so that no light can be seen through it or around it.
You can only open the door once, then you have to know the answer.
The switches themselves give no clue.

 

I'll bite, there is a window, keyhole?

 

Trying the three switches

Of course would only work if the other 2 operate something on this side of the door - which you would generally assume they do

Taking the switch plate off of the wall and following the wires

Cut a hole in the door

If you can only open the door once, open it and then try the switches
Think I may have missed the point on that one

One switch is the light in the room you are in? So if you turn all 3 on and off you know which it is and you eliminate that one switch. Now you have two. Turn one on, open door, if the light is on, you found it. If it isn't on, then it is the last switch. Right?

 

Duh...um...the third switch (presuming these are beside the first door). Have another friend with me...I enter the other room and leave door open to call out while my friend turns on each switch in sequence while we both observe what lights go on.

If this doesn't work, I would sack the installer for not labelling the switches

Okay, I give in...what's the answer to this riddle?

Here's the answer.

Turn on the first switch and wait five minutes. Turn off the first switch, turn on the second switch and open the door. If the light is on you know it's the second switch. If the light is off, touch the lightbulb. If it is hot, it's the first switch, if it's cold it must be the third switch.

My daughter told me this one and claims she figured it out after five minutes because she's "a genius". I couldn't get it.

I just thought look inside the swtches for blue spark most times you can see one if the rooms dark,the solution is cool though

 

Hey sibeer, your daughter and my son must be related somehow for he is always telling me he's "a genius" tooLOL darn little "Rug Rats", trouble is their brains seem to dissappear when we give them some chore to do. Funny "Einstein" one minute "Rofus Dofus" the next. Great Riddle though

 

it is an exercise in non linear thinking. most children do well in it because their thought patterns haven't been trained into the lock step of logic.

give your kids a strictly logic problem and watch them flounder for a while. that will take the wind out of their sails

 

When I assumed this: "Duh...um...the third switch (presuming these are beside the first door)..." I used sequence logic...but your daughter's answer is quite genuis!

errrm, idk. Its the first time I've heard this one but you all being a smart bunch, I figured it may have been heard of... its very possible phantom

Also I forgot to mention you dont know which computer lies and which one tells the truth LOL

 

Oh poo...... I know this one, they have a version of it in the mnovie The Labarynth with David Bowie. I just can't think of it. I know it has to do with asking one what the other would say.
