Lately when I try to double click and open .mp3 files, Spybot S&D wants to scan the file first. No help on Safer Networking, other users have reported this, and they don't seem to understand the question. One user was told how to disable context menu a few times, they gave up.

OK, same problem for me. Uninstalled S&D, Revo'ed it as well and cleaned the registry manually for traces. Reboot. All is good. S&D is gone...

Double click an .mp3 file and now Windows asks what to use to open, even tho in Properties WMV is already listed. OK fine I say, I select WMV and check Always Use this. It opens and plays fine. However this setting doesn't seem to stick.

    Any guidance appreciated...

Hi cipher, i think this mght be the root of your problem, it is not good to manually edit the registry, unless you really know what your doing it can cause many problems.

    *************
    Here is what to do....

    [1] Uninstall Windows media player.

    [2] Download and run Ccleaner...
    Ccleaner - http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

    [3]Then run a chkdsk......

To run chkdsk go to run and type
Hit enter, say yes, then restart.

    [4] Download and reinstall WMP
    WMP11 - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx
    WMP10 - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/10/default.aspx

Once you have done all this, it is a good time to run a defrag, although not needed to address this issue, it can not hurt, and is good form to defrag after a chkdsk :)

    First, thanks for the reply.

I had the problem BEFORE I uninstalled and deleted the leftover reg entries. I am experienced in that, 2 safer networking keys remained, and now they're gone. No big deal here....

    R&R WMV no good.

I don't see where Ccleaner or chkdsk have anything to do with S&D taking ownership of an extension because Windows is scrambled on this issue.

VLC media player, once selected, stays. I don't understand why XP asks if it should remember app to open with and then doesn't do it. It remembers all other apps/file associations.

This is a Windows problem, I'm fairly certain.

It is entirely up to you if you want to follow my advice or not, but my advice is still the same, and all steps are completely safe to do.

R and R, I suspect is short hand for rinse and repeat...meaning he has to keep repeating the action always use this to open that type file and still WMV doesn't remember.

    g'day cipher

as you have spyware blaster running on your computer you can always turn off tea timer and the realtime protection of spybot search and destroy as you are doubling up on spyware protection then use spybot as a secondary scan.this would stop the program scanning files before you open them.just a thought hope this helps.

R&R = Remove and Reinstall, sorry should have been clearer.

I never had tea timer, big PIA in my opinion...

I resolved this by backing up to WMV (Windows Media Viewer) 9

Thanks for the replies, appreciated!! :)
