File Associations Problem

I've been left with several problems after cleaning up a malware attack -- thanks to chaslang -- who suggested I might get help here for these items:

    1. My File associations are not displayed even though I can see the keys in the Registry. I am trying to update these manually, but would like to find a way to add whatever the Registry is missing so that the keys would be properly read.

    2. I cannot link to anything because the file association for LNK and/or LNKFILE is missing. What should this file association be???

    3. I cannot run Add/Remove Programs which bombs when trying to find the icons as it loads. Appwiz.cpl is on the machine in the proper place. I've attached screen prints of the errors received.

    4. Oh yes, even though there is a HKLM\Software\RegisteredApplications key, there is no data in it. Can this be updated manually? And how do I determine what the entries should be?

    I'm on W2K Pro with SP4 and Rollup 1 for SP4 installed.

As you can imagine, I would be MOST GRATEFUL for whatever help I can get!

Progress has been made! I have most of my file associations back and clicking on them starts the appropriate programs.

However I still need to know what programs are used to open LNK (link files) and TTF (true type font files). If anyone with W2k could take a look at the Files Types tab under Folder Options and post the info, I would be most grateful.

    TIA,
    JudithK

TTF Opens with Windows Font Viewer. I'm not sure where the program is located. I've looked in the WINNT folder and don't see it. I searched for Windows Font Viewer and got 123 objects. The one that seems the closest might be fontview.exe in C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache
There is also FONTVIEW.EXE in C:\WINNT\system32 and fontsub.dll in C:\WINNT\system32 and also in C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache

There is no entry for LNK. I suspect because each shortcut, refers back to the exe for that particular shortcut. A shortcut for IE would open IE.exe.

Thanks for the info. I found FONTVIEW.exe in my Winnt\system32 folder and added that but I get an "invalid TTF file" message when I click on a TTF file.
I know that the files themselves are NOT invalid because my other font programs can read them.

It's the lack of the LNK association that's driving me nuts -- I have to go manually thru the Explorer to open all my programs -- EXCEPT for the Microsoft Office programs which I can open directly from my desktop.

What a nuisance this all is!!

Thanks every so much! That site really helped. I had to make
a few adjustments in the RegFiles, but I now have the link and
scf files working properly. Great progress! I guess I need something
similar for the font files so I'll start hunting around on my own.

I'm also still having a problem with compiled Help files (.chm). But
I think the problem is with Internet Explorer (which I did reinstall).
I'm getting a "cannot find server" error page which says on the
bottom "cannot find server or DNS Error. Internet Explorer". Any
suggestions? Or should I post this as a new topic.

At any rate I'm in much better shape and really appreciate your
    help. Thanks Again

DNS error might mean you need a fix for the Winsock. The winsock can get damaged when malware is removed.
    I run this http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
to repair the winsock. You can either download the zip, which contains the two files or look at the txt file on the site and then just download the exe and run it.

Just an FYI: in another part of the site, I found info on registering my dlls and that has done the trick -- mostly, as I still cannot figure out how to
get the Fontview.exe program to read my font files -- but at this point, that is a VERY minor inconvenience!

This is the file: IEREG.BAT which I found referenced in Malware Removal
Post titled "Almost There but still not complete"

    Thanks again for your help.
