    Hi Geeks:
I normally copy all my files to my CDRW (Verbatim Ultra Speed 16x24) at the office to update my PC at Home. However when I burn my data at work the files attribute box Read Only is unchecked. When I use this same CD at home the files attribute box "read only" is checked. Consequently I have lots of problem updating my outlook express phone book etc.
I tried unchecking at home the Read Only box but it does not allow it.
    Pls advise
    Thanks
    Alfred

when you copy from a read only media like a cd,the file attributes remain read only. the only thing you can do is select the ALL of the files and uncheck the read only property.

... right - you can change file attributes only after copying files back to hard drive ;)

Wait a minute, guys! If that's right, wouldn't that mean that if you back up an entire drive (OS, apps, utils, data, and docs) to CD, and then copied back after a disaster and formatting the drive, the copied back system would be absolutely useless?

I mean, aren't there tens of thousands of files on any main drive that are NOT read-only, like ALL the dlls, for instance, and ALL the docs and data and images ...
    ????

(Sorry for the ignorance: I back up to rewriteable PD discs and backup HDs, and have never restored from real CDs.)

not entirely...you can change the file attributes in a click of a button. But whenever you copy from CD, the att's are set to Read Only.

Prior to using these Ultra Speed CDRW I was using regular CDR or CDRW"s (Lower speeds). I backed up my files from the hard drive at the office brought it back home and restored the files to my home PC without running into this problem. However I started having a problem with these lower speed CDRW's after backing up just a few times. I was told the reason for the problem was that these low speed CDRW's were not matching the faster speed of my CDRW drive, bot at home and office. Therefore I switched to these Verbatim Ultra speed CDRW's.
I want to be able to restore my files the simplest way which is for Instance when you restore Quicken files or import Outlook Express address book it's much simpler to use its restore features within Quicken than copying its files one by one to the hard drive.
The weirdest thing is that when I check the file attributes at the office PC on the same exact CDRW they are are not read only but they are read only in my home PC.
    Pleas advise

But then how is it that when I copy files from a store-bought program CD or an OS CD all of the attribs are correct when they land on my HD? The read-onlies are RO, and the NOTs are NOT.

    What's the diff?

And I know most of you guys never even heard of PD drives, but I love 'em and have 'em on all of my machines, and there is no such problem with the PD discs (they look just like CDs, but they're in a hard cassette case with a sliding cover: look kinda like thicker 5" x 5" floppies): If I copy a non-archive, non-ro file from the HD to a PD disc, it STAYS non-archive, non-RO. I can copy back 98SE from PD discs to an HD, switch the jumpers and make the partition active, and run SE with no further changes at all.

Can you do that with a backup copied to CD?

I don't think anybody copies whole partitions to CD.
First you make image of that partition (using Drive Image) and then burn it to CD. (You can also make compressed image to fit on CD).

depends on what a PD drive is.. gimme a link and I'll look at it and I'll try to explain based on what I read.

See? Told ya none of you guys had heard of them. They came out just WEEKS before CD-Rs (EDIT: CD-RWs!) came on the market, and CD-RWs won the race by a long shot because the media for PDs were $20 a disc, while the then-new price for CD-Rs was only a couple of dollars each.

But PDs are infinitely rewriteable, fast, and copy exactly, no changes, no problems. Just very expensive (and now obsolete, I guess).

    Mine work great still.

    Hey Geeks!
How about dealing with my File Attribute problem? We are going off on a tangent with this discussion.
    Thanks

I thought Kodo answered it way up there! You have to manually change them on the HD (not on the CD).
